I stopped playing Sims 3 about two years ago because I got sick of the bugs, terrible quality control, and basically fixing the game more than I played it. This was a huge step for me because The Sims franchise were the only games I had played seriously since Sims 2 came out when I was about 12. Since then I've been branching out as a gamer, playing a lot of RPGs and stuff. I'm glad I did because I've really enjoyed myself and discovered that there are a lot of great games out there, and not all of them are linear shoot-em-up fests. But sometimes I find myself missing Sims, so I think I might go back and start playing again.

Just a few questions before I do.

1) I'm starting on a new computer; the one I used to play Sims on is long gone. I've found the base game and most of my old expansions (except for Late Night, but that kind of sucked anyway), but I lost the original box and product key for Ambitions. Is there any way I can retrieve it, or am I basically screwed? I'd hate to re-buy a game that I saved up to buy years ago just because I lost the product key.
2) I used to use Twallan's Nraas mods for everything. I couldn't play the game without them. Is he still around? The old forum I had in my bookmarks appears to be gone. If not, are there any suitable alternatives other than AwesomeMod?
3) Can I mix physical disks with expansion packs bought from the Steam store? I might buy some of the new expansions, but I don't like using physical disks anymore. I love Steam because they have great sales and it's nice having all my games in one place.
4) Anything else I need to know that may have changed during my absence?

Edited to delete out the question about which expansion packs are worth buying, didn't realize it was against the rules.

(That's illegal Jess. No pirating on this website.)

1. ShooBad, if you have the case you have a serial number, like a bar code. If you contact EA support they should be able to help you if you can give them that. If you registered the game on the website, they can send just you the product key.
2. Yes. He's around, however, with the new 1.55 patch out today, most of his mods are now incompatible. If you wait a week or so, he'll be back up and running. Here's the link: http://nraas.wikispaces.com/
3. I don't think so. I think you can only do that with Origin and physical disks. Steam is a whole other system.
4. Heh. Guess you'll just have to find out.

I don't know about mixing physical disks with Steam, as I've done all of my game buying digitally for the last several years, but I can say that Steam will not play nicely with any copies you may get from Origin (which would possibly include Ambitions for you - if you registered the game and expansions on the official site, you can simply download any copies you may be missing and use the Origin client to find your game keys).

Thanks for all your helpful answers, Lasnien and DeNile! When I said I "lost the box", I meant I lost the original case and the serial number. I did register my game, so I'll just contact EA support about it.

Well boo. Not a big deal, but that is kind of annoying. I had a feeling that The Sims' wacky EP system wouldn't play nice with Steam.

Sorry for posting this in the wrong place, Ricalynn. I hope I wasn't too much trouble.

Hi!  I've also just started to replay too, and had a lot of the same questions! :p

When reinstalling, I noticed that all of my previously registered games were re-downloadable from the Origin Client, and most everything I had was on disc.

So it might be worth it to fire up Origins and take a look before calling customer service.

You can definitely mix Origin Downloads with hard discs.  I just downloaded all my missing EPs (you can link through this site to the store), and everything seems to work well with my old stuff.
