Newbie needs help - general challenges question

OK, I looked all over the place and I'm sure it's out there somewhere,  but I'm going to ask an obvious question re: challenges: are there any that can be played with just the base game? As far as I can see most of them have "vacation days" or objects that come from one of the expansion packs.

Is it worth even trying if I only have the base game?

Most of the challenges assume that you have all the expansion packs (although not the stuff packs).  You can certainly play the challenges without the expansion packs, you will automatically be at a disadvantage right from the starting gate.  I would say that most people play the challenges for fun and not necessarily to win, so you are more than welcome to give it a shot even if you haven't purchased the expansions.

There might be one or two that don't involve any expansion material, I'm sure Metro would be able to help you with that.

Thanks - I've already heard from him! And I'll probably give it a go - loved doing Sims 2 challenges.

Guess I'll just have to flog more stuff on ebay so I can get the EPs!

If you want to just play the challenges for fun, take a look in the graveyard here http://www.carls-sims-3-forum.com/index.php/board,11.0.html at some of the older challenges that were done before expansion packs.

Right.  We had challenges in 2009 before World Adventures came out.  No leader board updates or World Ranking, but you can play them for fun.  I especially recommend the Baby Boomers challenge.
