Remodelers R Us
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:16:14 PM »
Well, not everyone likes to build from scratch, right?  And not everyone likes the houses available in the library.  There is always something you want to do to make it more "your" house.  So how about if we do a thread where we show a bit of story and screen shots  of how we have remodeled a stock house?  Pick one already in town or put a different one on a lot and go for it.  I think it would be fun to see the creative ways folks change a house and lot around.  Could even make a contest out of it if that sounded good.  I won't post any photos until I know this would be ok. (And I'm SO hoping I can show off what I did to the Goth mansion.)

Let me think on this, Joria.  We have a rule on for forum against "frivolous" posts such as beauty contests and rate the avatar above you.  The idea is to keep the forum discussions on track with substantial Sims 3 content.  I've disallowed threads just for showing off houses because of this and we came up with the Building Contest to have a controlled environment for participation from members.  We're trying to stay a step above the official forum in quality and content.  I'd like to poll the moderators and get their opinions because this issue with houses keeps coming up.  I'll be back with a ruling as soon as I can.  :)

Well, I guess I don't see how showing what someone had done creatively to a stock house would be frivolous, but as I said, it could be done in the context of a contest.     Different from build a  house to a moderator's specs because the house in general is already built.  If you like, I could come up with a challenge with rules etc. for just such a thing.  I have personally learned a lot by seeing what others have done to stock houses, and I am endlessly amazed at how poorly set up most stock houses are, let alone how well decorated.  I absolutely can see how a thread like that can get out of hand.  It can easily become a p-ing contest of mine's bigger/better than yours, which would ruin it.  Such threads on other sites have definitely degenerated and become space hogs and boring.   My idea was to show what you've done, and say why and how you did it without the use of mods or unacceptable cc.  It's up to you guys of course, and I want you to know it was just an idea and won't be a harm to me in anyway if you decide to not allow it.

Landscaping could be another facet or challenge of such a contest and could even help people learn a few things about landscaping.  It's really more than plunk down a few trees as I'm sure you know, and I for one would love to learn how to do more with less.  I tend to clutter.

I love the way the build a house contest is going at the moment and hope there will be a lot more entries.  Each house is so very different and each one is creative, well done and lovely.  I'd live in any of them.  I'm personally torn between two of them for my favorites and really don't know how, whoever is going to judge them, will do so.  Definitely shows a lot of creativity, which is one of the reasons I love Sims.

Thanks for your patience, Joria.  After hearing from the moderators, I think we'll start with a thread that allows showing house pictures, whether they are built from scratch or remodels.  We need to take baby steps because it's a new area for the forum and nobody wants it to get out of hand.  The important thing will be that it all be contained in one thread for now, somewhat like the Babble Thread for off-topic discussions.  We realize that building is a big part of the game for a lot of people and they deserve to have a place to showcase their work.  I expect the building thread will go up in the next day or so.  :)

Thank you so much Pam.  One of the things I really like about this forum is you DO listen to the folks here, discuss their ideas, and either go with them or gently decide not to.  It's refreshing to be in a group that doesn't disrespect people.  RL is being rather tough at the moment so the kindness I find here is greatly appreciated.
