Everybody's best friend... not

So my sims have completed this charisma challenge, and it worked for a bit, and then broke. How do I fix it so that my sims gain that bonus again?

Broke how? Do you mean that their relationahips still decay even although they have completed the challenge AND it still shows as complete? Because that happened to me a few times and I was really disappointed. I took the time to get my sim all those friends to avoid decaying friendships!

I'm sorry that this isn't a solution. I just wanted to see if someone else was experiencing this issue as well.

No, it's supposed to jump from good friends, to best friends. It just doesn't.

It depends on the situation.  It almost always works on Sims that are teen and older but my experience is that it's about 50% chance if they're younger than a teenager.   It seems to be random and while sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.  No explanation.  I think each interaction gives a certain amount of (+) and sometimes it's possible that you miss the threshold by being a point away and that messes with the games head and it freaks out.   Probably not true but that's the way it seems based on recent events within my games.

Since my dad Sim got the best friend reward his relationship bar starts at friend rather then just aquaintance. It doesn't skip from good friend to best friend though.

Does your sim have either the "eye candy" or the "attractive" LTR or the "beauty" wish from the genie? 

Any one or better still, combination of these, will give your sim a little boost which should solve your problem.  Certain traits also help with this.  The obvious one is charisma, but, "good sense of humour" should get your sim from friend to best friend in a single interaction.  I find that sims with beauty, eye candy and attractive will sometimes become best friends with other sims simply by being in the same room, or having tthem pass by in the street if they have achieved the everybody's best friend challenge.  Unfortunately, sims they were aquainted with before getting the best friend status are not affected and you still have to either work to bring them up in the usual way, or simply just forget about them.

Chuckles, I wonder if some of your Sim's best friends might have either moved away or died?  I've noticed that when I move a Sim to another town, that skill challenge no longer shows as completed, so I think it must refer to current best friends only. 

Another possibility, if you have Late Night installed, is that your Sim might have lost relationships with some of their previous best friends because of being falsely accused of something.  That was a big part of why I eventually uninstalled LN, because I worked so hard to get my Sims' friendships to not decay and I wasn't willing to have to deal with all the lost friendships because  of the celebrity thing.
