Can I Add A Belated Foundation?
« on: June 29, 2010, 11:13:51 PM »
I'm building my first home and couldn't afford a foundation at first. I've decorated and furnished the first floor. Before I go any further, is there some way to place a foundation between the ground and the first floor? If not, is there a way to move aside the decorated walls while I lay a foundation?

I've built houses without foundations and then later wanted to lift them up. I really think your only option is to demolish the existing house and rebuild on a foundation. This is the way I have always done it, I don't think there is another option. I usually just start at one side and demolish a bit, build the new part and move stuff into it, then demolish a bit more and so on till you have the new house on a foundation.
Sometimes when I know that I will want to build on a foundation in the future, I build the first house away from where I want the 'real' house to go, then I build it bit by bit, eg. I might stat by building the kitchen on the foundation , so they just have to go up to the new part to cook.

I'm experimenting with pushing the rear wall to the back of the lot, then the other ones back like an inch worm. By the time I pull them all back (if they go on top of the foundation), I will have bought and sold a whole ton of materials and probably will lose a lot of money.

I'm confused by pre-WA google results in learning about foundations. For game purposes is the entire slab necessary, or just an outline? If a slab, can the basement tool be used later, or should I put one in first just in case.

These guys may have to go back to living on the grass with a baby due!

edit: I'm taking apart Willow Manor in Twinbrook and what appears to be a foundation is simply a half-wall in outline of the house. Bare grass beneath.

Just an outline of the foundation is needed. I build the whole foundation, then delete all but the outer row and add floor, but you need to delete only one or two rows at a time otherwise you can't replace the floor. By doing this (deleting foundation) you can save a little bit of money, not a lot, but still a saving is a saving. I don't think you loose money on building, I'm pretty sure that when you demolish, you get back the original price.

As for basements, you can build them later with a full foundation or just the outline. If you have a full foundation, you will have to demolish some of it to add the stairs though. Whichever you have though, the stairs will need to be done in two stages. The first one from the floor to the ground, then the second one from the ground to the basement floor. Actually, I like that, because you can have stairs that go down a little way, then make a right angled turn before continuing down.

I've never been able to add a basement to a house with a foundation.  Norma, can you describe it in a little more detail?  :)

Sure, give me a little bit of time (couple of hours) and I'll do a mini tutorial with some pics. Maybe we need another forum topic section for building hints, tips and questions?

**edit** ok, I didn't get this finished when I wanted to - I forgot I was babysitting the grand daughter this evening which means she had the computer just about all night, but I have done most of it. Bed time almost, so I will finish it off in the morning.

I don't think you loose money on building, I'm pretty sure that when you demolish, you get back the original price.
My understanding is that once you leave Build mode the materials begin to depreciate in value. I tested it out using the hammer to delete materials, and for those materials, I did not get full value in refund.

I would love more help and tips about building and support the idea of a thread or subforum on the subject.

edit: Thanks Norma for the upcoming tutorial!

About the basement+foundation workout, a simple solution (if you are a little perceptive) is to go to the Landgraab Chateau in France and check on the room that leads to the basement, which I found to be quite self-explanatory. If you didn't unlock it that far you can just testingcheatsenabled and shiftclick on the floor, buy/build and check it out.

In case you are too lazy to go there, I'll try to make it simple: you demolish 2 squares of the foundation, you put a 1/4 of a staircase leading the way foundation-floor, then add the basement (at the lowest level, that cuts the top of foundations), and then put a 4/4 (duh) staircase all the way down.

I'm probably missing something so we should wait for Norma's pictured tuto.
