Camera Non-Routable question?
« on: September 23, 2012, 09:11:46 AM »
Hi, everyone.
I just built my first town from scratch in CAW. I'm super excited but I'm having a few issues.

I decided that I wanted my town to be landlocked except for the river that runs through the middle. I've done everything except add my sims to my world, which I decided to do today. To my disappointment, on all sides you could see the "edge" of the world. When I entered "Edit in Game" mode, the camera kept me from going toward the edge or even being able to see it but in actual game, the edges are all visible.  :'(

Does the use of 'Camera Non-routable' painting actually hide the edges? What can I do to hide them?

Thanks in advance. :)

The camera routing tool only set the parameters of where the camera is allowed to move in-game... I would suggest using the 'distant terrain' objects, and perhaps creating some hills around the edge - they can be fairly high, as the camera won't be able to move over them... Perhaps the Riverview terrain would be good, as you've created a world with a river running through it?

I'd love to see pictures of your world as well!

Thanks so much for the information and the tips. :) Is there a way to switch maps (like import terrain map or something? Will that work?) I've done so much work to this world to get it just the way I want (the lots are pretty much finished even though I did just borrow some from pre-built cities) and I dread trying to start over again. I've been working on this world for about a month now!

I'd love to show it off if I ever get it finished but I think (mostly since I did borrow pre-existing lots) that I'm a little too embarrassed to let anyone see it.

According to a tutorial I read, you need at least 1 chunk width of camera non-routable around the edges to not see  the edge. Also, distant terrain is not available for small worlds (or tiny). I've been making a landlocked world, and am just going to have to deal with the fact that You'll be able to see the sea when you zoom out.

One last thing, the camera non-routable works differently in edit-in-game to in actual game after you export it.

Lastly, if you're not against using custom content, you may be able to download a custom distant terrain.

To be shore you don't see the edges of the world even from town view, you should mark 2 chunks (square grids) on the edges of the world as camera non routable, or 1 and a half square if surrounded with high mountains. You can add several different distant terrains on the edges, you can sink them, rotate and combine anyway you want, but to really see the effect of what you did you have to export the world and check in game.
Good idea is to have the camera non routable edges in straight line as calculating routing is easier and faster when it is done that way. Plus when exploring the world you won't have camera stuck in uneven wholes that are camera routable. Also, make shore you don't leave ANY spot unmarked as that will cause the lag - game will occasionally spawn a Sim in non marked areas if you leave them. While you are playing with routable areas check well if you have some routable isolated islands around your world to make your world run smoothly :)

I also have questions about camera non-routable paint and distant terrain.  The world I'm currently attempting to make is a peninsular, so one edge is land and the rest is surrounded by water.  I've put camera non-routable paint behind the mountains on my land-side and went to see it in game, and I can't see anything because it's like I'm surrounded in thick fog, and the world beyond a few meters away just disappears!  Have I missed something?  And also, how do you use distant terrain?  Maybe I haven't looked enough, but I'm still very confused.

Edit: Somehow the mysterious fog has now disappeared.  I haven't changed anything, so I'm not sure what that was about. *shrug*

Another edit:  Turns out the fog occurs when you zoom in too far.  Is that normal?  Here are some pics.
