Can't use bait when fishing? (AKA: Ambrosia Problem)

Hi there. I got the Sims Deluxe (base game plus Ambitions) and it has been working fine until a few days ago.

I really need to make Ambrosia. I got all the requirements: the lifefruit, the recipe, the skills, and all I need is the deathfish. However, none of my sims can use bait whatsoever. I can use the standard lure, but when they go to use bait, they stand there for a sec and the action prompt disappears completely. This is not just for the deathfish - I can't use any bait for any fish. How can I make ambrosia if I can't get the deathfish?!

And my game is up-to-date by the way.

PLEASE, any help is appreciated. I really want to get this fixed!

If they're level ten, just have them fish with no bait at the proper time. I never use bait except when I;m only interested in vampire fish.

Welcome to the forum, kef. 

Is this problem happening in all your games or just the one?  Have you tried exiting the game and restarting?  It's amazing how often that fixes problems.  Another thing to consider is what items are in your Sims' inventories.  There's an old bug that causes fishing problems when the Sims have special seeds in their inventory.  I don't know if that bug is still around as it's a while since I've played an angler, but it wouldn't hurt to empty out their inventories and see if that makes a difference.

I've tried restarting the game and resetting my families but all the neighborhoods have the same problem. I wish it was the special seeds

Oh well, I really appreciate the response! And thanks for the welcome Maybe I could re-install the game? I'd lose everything but I won't really progress any farther fishing-wise if this bug stays...

I've had this bug more than once and I don't think there's a way to fix it.  However, your Sim will catch Deathfish with the lure if you go to the right spot after midnight and before 5:00 a.m.  He won't get as many as he would with the bait, but he'll still get some.
