Question on spell check
« on: October 07, 2012, 03:09:59 PM »
I am confused.  Is there a way to do a spell check here?

I haven't seen any button to use to do a spell check.  I did a search but after five pages I gave up.  I am not sure if there is an automatic one or a set one for different types of browsers (I have IE) or what.

I have a dictionary beside me to double check spelling when I am not sure of a word, but I am sure I miss one here and there.

The biggest problems I have are switching a letter, such as form and from, which are not caught by a spell check; those I generally catch by my proofreading a couple (or three) of times.

My grammer is not the best, but I do try to get it correct ( I still think it was unfair for the instructor to deduct points in a research paper for independent clauses; how could I stop using them in a paper if I didn't know what one was?).

Which raises a question I have.  Are there times when you ask a question yet do not use a question mark?   I am hoping that there is a grammer "policeperson"  here who can answer that for me.

And if anyone is wondering how I could go through school without learning the grammer rules, my sister and I traded classes, she took my English and I took her History.  We were eventurally caught.

I have IE

There's your biggest problem. Get either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Polite imperative clauses, such as "Would you mind talking more quietly," spring up to my mind. Not really sure about other sentences.

Again, use either GC or MF. They have a spell-checker built-in.

There used to be, but I think Carl lost the feature during an upgrade, or something. And all browsers apart from IE have an inbuilt spellchecker. Like, for instance, I use Chrome. If I misspell a word, the red line that appears in MS Word when you misspell something appears under it.

In english a question is always ended with a question mark. Otherwise it is not correctly written as a question. Verbally, it is a change in the intonation of the words, in writing, it is symbolized by the question mark.

Example:
1. Do you know who Agnes Crumplebottom is.
This is basically just a badly worded statement

2. Do you know who Agnes Crumplebottom is?
This is clearly a question.

Hope this helps! English has far too many rules, even with English as my first and only language it still occasionally confuses me. If you have other questions feel free to ask.

I haven't found a spell checker on the site either. But it's probably an oversight. There has got to be one here.
In the meantime, I much enjoy my dictionary, and thesaurus, for that matter.
A question, being portrayed as a question or not, much depends on your story-line and your own artistic judgement.
Some questions almost sound like a statement, rhetorical ones in particular. :)

I'm afraid Seabody is right about the spell checker.  We had one on the site, but when Carl upgraded the Forum, it was no longer compatible and he hasn't found another one to replace it.  Our best advice is to use an internet browser that has a built-in spell checker.

Thanks everyone for the help.

I also have a dictionary and thesaurus close at hand all of the time; don't understand how people can do without either of them.

I like my IE, so I will stay with checking my dictionary (probably good for my brain anyhow, it needs the exercise), I can also use Word and do a spell check there.
I do need to buy a couple of new dictionaries, there are some words that I can't find in the ones I have; so I need to update them.

English is a difficult language to learn, we have too many rules, they are constantly changing and I cringe when I hear the way some of the people here in my home area speak.

Chrome has a nice spell check, altough kinda useless for me, as my laptop (and Chrome) has Spanish as default language :P

Anyway, just try to be the more correct possible... and keep WordReference.com open!
