Building Contest 2012: 19 - Decades of Décor, Comments

You must read the Rules and Instructions Thread first, if you haven't already.

Building Contest 2012: 19 - Decades of Décor

Your Task:
Décor is one of the things in life that you can guarantee will never stop changing. It's a fact of life that things change as the decades fly by. What was once the fashion in the 1950's was completely different to the fashion in the 1980's and only twenty years separates them. So with the ever changing taste in designs there must be a solution. That solution is to create a house with each room taking on a different Decade's Décor. Which those will be are up to you.. However there must be a minimum of 7 different Decades represented, they can be from any time in History or the Future - e.g. The 1930's or the 1630's.

Stonehurst was founded many many years ago by the first settlers of this town. In order to build this homestead the land had to be cleared and the house was built with each stone hand picked by the settlers. It's been many decades since this homestead was built by my ancestors . During these decades the home was updated. Each room represents a decade. I choose to update the home this way in honor of my ancestors.

DECADES-BY-THE-SEA

Lot size: 30 x 20
Price Furnished: 74,527
Price Unfurnished: 45,241
(On 18 Maywood Lane, Sunset Valley)

Expansions Used: WA, AMB, LN, GEN, PETS, SHO, SN
Stuff Packs Used: HELS, OLS

Decades-by-the-Sea is the result of a Sunset Valley couple's dream to open a bed and breakfast.  Unfortunately, they ran out of money midway through the renovation of this stately old Victorian, which means the upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms are still in the state left by the prior owner -- that is to say, a mishmash of furnishings ranging from the 1930s onward.

But while the 1950s, 1970s and 1980s live on upstairs, the dining rooom has been given a Colonial makeover, the parlor has been restored to Victorian opulence, and the kitchen/great room has been fully modernized.  There are two other rooms just waiting to be decorated.

The American Dream

Lot type: Residential Lot.
Lot size: 30 x 30.
Suggested placement: 99 Landgraab Avenue, Sunset Valley.
Price: $59,790.

Contains: Ambitions, Fast Lane, Late Night, Generations, Showtime, and Supernatural.

This is an excellent two bedroom, one bathroom post-war bungalow. While some may see a fixer-upper, others see the decades of decor as characterful. The bathroom is pleasantly pink, while the kitchen is abundantly avocado! The living room is fully equipped with wood panelling, orange shag carpet, and a dance floor! It's perfect for those long disco parties that go 'til dawn! The master bedroom is refreshingly conservative with it's pastel colours and separate beds. The second bedroom is a perfect teen cave straight from the 80's, with a vanity great for doing up your big hair and a record player that supplies steady beats! The muscle car parked on the driveway is perfect for cruising 'round town on a friday night! Purchase this home today! Will you bring it into the 21st century or embrace it's eclectic style?

Building Contest 2012: 19 - Decades of Decor - September 23, 2012 - October 6, 2012
    Micler!

Congratulations Micler! What a fantastic house showcasing the many distinct decades you chose. You can see Micler's Entry here and download it here.

Micler's Comment:

"Thank you to everyone who voted for my entry! This was one of the best contests we've had so far. It was a lot of fun! For the exterior, I decided to go with a very typical postwar american style. The 1950's gave me the idea for a bathroom with pink fixtures and black and white tile floor. For the kitchen, I thought of the favourite appliance colour from the 1960's; avocado! My main inspiration for the living room was the orange plush carpet and wood panelling of the 70's! A dance floor, disco ball, and floral-print sofa completed the look. Old television shows gave me the idea for single beds in the conservative, pastel coloured master bedroom. I designed the teen bedroom in a 1980's style. Vibrant colours, animal prints, records, and big hair were my inspiration.

Congratulations to ladybug53 and intl_incident for their great entries! Thanks to samoht04 and Lilygirl for hosting these building contests, and thanks again to everyone who voted! :) "

@ ladybug - I loved, just loved your green bedroom with the cast iron bed frame. I also liked the living room. Keeping it red and black really helped sell the period feel.

Congrats, Micler! I really loved your entry, especially the twin beds in the master bedroom.  Lucy and Ricky would be so at home. ;)  It was the wood paneling in the 70s room that put it over the top for me though.  Very true to life!

ladybug53, I also really liked your green bedroom, and the "Asian Spa" feeling of your bathroom -- I know at least three people who had bathrooms in that style in the late 90s. :D  I've never seen that metal pattern used as wallpaper that way, and it looked great.  If I would ve changed anything, it would have been the wall color in the kitchen (hard to match those awesome 50s cabinets, but the beige and brown just felt kind of off somehow) and the rug in the bathroom, which seemed sort of oddly old-fashioned in those colors.  Minor nitpicks, though.  The house looked great!

As always, I am open for any comments y'all would be willing to make on mine.  Very fun contest (and so is the next one!)  Thanks to the mods for running these, and glad I have time to participate again.

Thanks everyone! ladybug53 and intl_incident, both of your entries were great! This was a really fun contest. :)

I especially liked the red living room and blue kitchen in your entry, ladybug53! They're really true to their periods, and look fantastic. The exterior and the dining room are my favourite parts of your build, intl_incident!
