Turn sim into Gold: Midas Touch

How long will this spell last? I can turn items into gold (some items) like furniture, but I can not change their colour. For some reason their value haven't increased, like I was expecting, but after I turn a sim into gold I am afraid I have killed them. Is there a reverse spell? Or is this spell just temporary?
I am hoping for the last one, as in Buy Mode I can't pick up the golden statues to place them somewhere else or to place them in my family inventory.
The turned sim still apears in my sims friend list and as the Grim Reaper didn't appear I guess the sim perhaps isn't dead yet.

EDIT: Wait, the items DO increase in value. I've turned a Old Sam's Diner Chair worth $900 into gold and now it's worth $2250.

It doesn't kill the sim, it just lasts for six hours, the sim is actually pretty well taken care of is what I remember from the one time I used it their needs go up actually I think, very slowly.
