Customizing roads - problem with intersection
« on: September 05, 2012, 10:50:22 AM »
I'm trying to create custom roads for my world using the original CAW textures (partly to avoid making the file too big, and partly because I'm a total newbie at using photoshop). I'm trying to make dirt roads for the rural areas of the world and the actual roads looks pretty cool. The problem is that the intersection looks really funny, like this:

From what I've been reading is a rather common problem but I was wondering if someone had found a workaround for it? I keep finding threads in google that rant and vent against EA for not fixing it but there's not much constructive info about it.  ::)

My solution, is to use a terrain paint that is the same color as the road and paint over it. This isn't even an error/glitch per say because it exists even in EA worlds. So, paint over. Problem solved. I do it for paths too that I want to look natural and not too even.

Oh, so it's not me doing it wrong LOL. OK, thanks Krrank! The painting idea sounds good, I'll give it a try  :)

Anushka had this happen in Union Cove, on the Dirt road on the other side of the river, leading up to my Character House is definitely one place it occurred, not sure about Naga's Brustles though. She painted the terrain under it to help disguise and also put those low heather like plants over the edges to cover the gaps. So that's one thing you could try as well.  :)

Oh! that's also a great idea! Thanks Thomas, I'll try that as well  :)

I actually managed to do it so that it looks a little bit better. Now I don't have this weird corners but only a  transparent line that divides the center of the intersection from the crosswalks. I think that should be easier to hide than the original one... hopefully!

Something I did when trying to figure out a way to create the illusion that road intersections were connected to the driveway in my apartment complex was make a duplicate of the Dirt_Sidewalk_Opacity.DDS file and just made it completely black which had the effect of making any custom sidewalk that used that file completely invisible.

Then when I made my custom road I used that Completely black DDS file for the intersection sidewalk opacity.

You can see the effect that had in this screenshot...

I eventually figured out a better trick that didn't need the custom road intersection at all.

But the invisible sidewalk trick looks like it would work well for this problem too and those .DDS files are tiny in size. just a few k so it won't add any significant size to your world.
