Install Sims 3 from Program Files
« on: August 25, 2012, 03:03:31 PM »
Does anyone know why you can't use the installation files for base game, EPs, etc to reinstall instead of having to download from Origin each time? I just spent some time on chat with them about this issue and couldn't get a real answer...just that it's "not recommended." It takes me 3 days to download and reinstall each time. I will have to do it...again...before Supernatural.

Hi, Jude.

When you download Sims 3 from Origin, it goes into a folder called C:\Program Files\Origin Games\The Sims 3 (or C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 3 for 64-bit Windows). This folder includes all of the installer files as well as the game. For most games, Origin uses an In-Place Install function which installs the game into it's installed folder, then runs a setup program to place any needed information into the registry and other locations.

To backup the installers, you just need to copy the game's folder into a different folder (such as an external hard drive). I'm running a test right now and will post clearer instructions as soon as I can. I just wanted to let you know it is possible to backup the installers in Origin games. :)

That's good to know, Flynn. I have already copied the files to the desktop and was going to try using them to install before taking the three days to download from Origin. Or worse yet, purchasing all of the games on disk. Thank you for taking the time to test this.

Hi, Jude.

I've done some tests and everything should work okay. There are a couple of folders that need to be renamed during the process, the folder for High-End Loft Stuff and the folder for Late Night. Otherwise, it's a pretty straightforward process. I need to type up some notes and take a few screenshots and I'll post the full instructions later tonight. :)

The project is taking longer than I thought. I'm re-downloading the installers to test some more stuff. It just takes some time to download several gigs, heh.

I'm hoping to have some stuff to post tomorrow evening. :)
