Question - Create a World Tutorial?
« on: March 10, 2012, 08:13:50 PM »
Does someone know of a tutorial or can write a CAW for "Dummies" guide? Hubby and I have tried the program out once or twice, but still have no clue how to use it.

It's something both Hubby and I are interested in working with as we enjoyed creating our own towns in Sims 2, with SimCity4.

Samoht04's Create A World Guide on the Guide might help you.

Thank you for the link. We checked it out and we're looking for a more detailed beginners guide. Maybe something that shows how to create (for example) a couple of roads and lots. We found a few tutorials on YouTube and they went by to quickly to understand. We're looking for written tutorials, perferably with photos.

Have you tried the EA tutorials? The CAW download page has links to two downloadable ones: A detailed guide for beginners, and a more general guide for planning worlds.

The one I did for the Guide was merely an introduction to let people know what you can do with Create a World. I don't think I really used tutorials much to learn myself, if I got stuck I did search for the answer and all though. All of the terrain features are pretty easy and from what I gather you should always complete the terrain of the world before doing much else.

Hubby says he's looked over the EA tutorials before, but hasn't in awhile. We were hoping we could find something on here. Since sometimes it's easier to read through.

Thanks for the tips :)  Creating the terrain and completing it first is a great tip!!

MrsFlynn and everyone else, I was tackling with this idea for a while, but haven't much time to complete it. Still, I hope those few posts and informations shared will be helpful, and to add more of what I planned.

Hi there - hope it's ok to resurrect this thread, I've just downloaded CAW and am on my first ever world (apart from a tiny test world where I tried out a few of the tools).

I'd like to add that Krrank's guide has been extremely useful to me - it's clear, covers all the steps in a logical order, and is thorough without being prescriptive. I'd definitely recommend it to someone who likes the idea of creating a world, but is perhaps a bit intimidated by the programme.

I'd also say that tring out a first tiny test world was really really helpful for me - without the pressure of trying to make something look the way I imagined it, it was easer to get a grip of the tools. They do take a bit of getting used to, but I kept the test world and Krrank's tutorial open in separate windows, and managed to get a feel for how things work pretty quickly. Some things take getting used to (like pressing 'Esc' after using roads or adding objects, or the hills grow much quicker than you'd imagine - consider softening the strength or size of the brush you're using), but experiment and play with it, and it shouldn't be too long before you're creating your very own world! The other thing I'd say is - the process of building a world doesn't happen over night, so don't beat yourself up if you haven't created something like Union Cove in a week  ;)

Could you post the link here DeLouche? I'm always up for an extra tutorial in CAW. Sometimes you uncover little tidbits that you haven't seen before, or special 'formula' for creating natural looking features - whether it be waterfalls, rocks, or landmarks etc.

Krrank already posted it, a couple of comments up :) Sounds like you're not a complete beginner; he's got a couple of tiptorials for different types of terrain, such as canyons, which look interesting.

I'd also be interested in seeing something about creating nice-looking waterfalls. Liked your tip in the other thread about putting stones at different heights to make different effects, as well.
