Need help with oddness placing my 60x60 lot
« on: July 21, 2012, 04:01:26 AM »
Okay, Here's the apartment building I'm working on for 15 Summer Hill Court in Sunset Valley...

but I'm having a problem, This building is so huge it's as wide as the lot will allow, 58 tiles wide since we can't build walls right on the edge of the lot.

That in it's self is not really the problem. The problem comes when I place the building on the lot. The two side balconies (you can barely make one out in the image above) get stretched upward for some reason. As shown in the image below.

It's easy enough to fix after placing the lot but I would much rather isolate and remove the cause before uploading to the swap shop. I've tried deleting every tile, wall and piece of furniture in the affected area hoping to get rid of some glitched item and after deleting all that stuff I saved to library, quit game, restarted computer, started new game and placed the building with the gaping holes in it's sides on to the lot and the balconies still got stretched up.

Then I thought, "Maybe it's just an oddness with this address caused by some near by trees just off the lot or something." so I swapped locations with the Altos next door and the same thing still happens even on a different 60x60 lot.

As I said earlier, It's easy enough to fix after placing so worst case scenario I can always post instructions and screenshots on how to fix after placing when I finally upload it but I'd rather not have to do that so does anybody have any ideas? Anything I haven't thought of?

Well floors get tilted like that sometimes when you use the constrainfloorelevation cheat. Did you use it at all while you were building and perhaps not turn it off before saving?

OOOohh, Good thought. Yes. I use it once to make the foundation. I used regular walls as the foundation and placed one actuall foundation square well away from the walls and used the level terrain tool with constrainfloorelevation of to squish the walla down to foundation hieght and then deleted the on actual foundation block. That was the only time I used and I may just have forgotten to turn it off. Good catch. Thanks.

Well, I just went in and enetered constrainfloorelevation on just in case. No way to find out for sure if I left it on or not.

Then I deleted the copy in the library and saved the new fixed copy with all cheats turned off and quit the program. Relaunched, new game and placed the new copy from the library and they still got stretched. :(

hmmmm, what to do now. I really don't want to start over again on a new lot. That would be such a huge pain.

Is the balcony edge one clear square from the edge of the lot or does it cover that edge square? If it's covering it and therefore the edge of the balcony is touching the very edge of the lot, that might be it?  :-\

Yes it does touch the edge but some information you're not aware of is the fact the the balcaony tiles are not affected directly but indirectly.

When a tiles height is affected by using the level terrain tool on tiles that aren't on ground level with the 'constrainfloorelevation off' cheat on then all the tiles directly above it on the upper floors are also affected.

Since this balcony three stories up is the only floor that has tiles all the way out to the edge of the lot it's not readily apparent which floor is the first floor affected so through some testing I was able to determine that it is in fact the foundation level that is the first floor affected and it has no tiles on the edge of the lot which lead me to conclude that Twinmum is correct and I left 'constrainfloorelevation off' on and saved it that way.

That's the risky thing about these cheats. You have to be diligent about turning them off before saving. You can remember to turn them off a thousand times and the one thousand and first time you forget it comes back to haunt you.

Edit:  hmmm, I just tried deleting the foundation walls (the ones I made with regular walls shortened to founation hieght with the constrainfloorelevation trick) directly under the balcony and replaced them with actual foundaion blocks then turned off all cheats and saved to libraray and that didn't help either. The balcony still gets stretched as well as all the squares directly beneath all the way down to the foundation. Those lower squares have nothing on them so they don't matter except for the fact that they affect the balcony.

what to do... what to do... :(

Second Edit: Actually, Thinking more about it I now think you're both right. We all know the level terrain tool doesn't work on ground level tiles on the edge of the lot because the terrain just outside the lot can't be altered to match. This is half true for every floor above. While the level terrain tool does work on tiles above ground level at the edge of the lot the height of a given floor level (in this case third story level) just outside the lot can't be altered to match so when placing the lot the game tries to match the height of ALL edge tiles at every story height (not just the ground level ones) which means I may not have forgotten to turn off the cheat after all.

If I'm right then I have only two options...

1. Delete that edge row of tiles on the balcony and just put the railing straight across right on top of the third story outer wall which would look as good in my opinion.

2. Post some instructions with screenshots on how to fix the stretching after placing it on a lot when I upload it to the swap shop.

Any one have any opinions on which you'd prefer if you're planning to downlad?

I think I would make the balcony a bit smaller, deleting the parts that are affected.  :) It seems the simplest solution.

Or put it on a 64x64 size lot and not a 60x60 lot.  That's what I would do if I downloaded it, which it is so incredibly gorgeous I definitely would do!

Actually I tried that. Didn't work. :( When I placed it on a 64x64 lot the game simply replaced the 64x64 lot with the 60x60 lot the building was built on so the only way to truely put it on a 64x64 lot would be to rebuild it from scratch.

I'm leaning towards that.

Let me know if you find a solution that fixes the tiles. I've had lots do that, and just ignored it and fixed it when I placed the lot.

I'm pretty sure there is no fix. I think it's going to do that no matter what I do. It's trying to match the floor hieghts with what they would be in the surrounding world outside the lot just like it does with ground level. That's my theory anyway.

Oh wow, Thanks. I totally missed that compliment the first time I read your post. As you can see by my number of posts I've been a bit of a lurker here for years and learned a lot from the builders here and I'm so happy to finally put all that into something worth contributing back. :)

Edit: it's up on the swap shop now. http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,11580.0.html
