Help needed: How do you snoop for clues

I am having trouble completing a case in the investigator career. I am supposed to snoop for clues and I can not seem to get my sim to do it. I tried clicking on the ground in the area in which she is to snoop and all I get is, (go here, sneak here, take for evidence). No matter where I click the option never comes up and she doesn't do it on her own. Can anyone help me?

It's a while since I've done the Private Investigator career, but doesn't a floating magnifying glass come up to show you where to look?  Sometimes you just have to look around to find the magnifying glass, at least that's how I remember it.

I did see the floating glass when i had to go to someones house and go through the mailbox and garbage can, but for some reason (and i looked) i see nothing that implies i can do anything in the area. When one of her asperations was to snoop i clicked on it to see how, it said to click on the ground where the current case is and she will pull out the glass. Sadly, nothing like that happened.

As I said, it's a while since I've done this career; I don't remember exactly how to do things, but I know I didn't have any trouble with it at the time.  Did you try clicking on the mailbox and garbage can?

If you are trying to snoop for clues at a community place, go to map view and click on the icon for the lot.  There you should have "visit blah blah" and in yellow "snoop for clues". Let me know if that works.

So when i clicked on the orange icon it said, visit the graveyard and steakout. But there was no other option, this is the second time i am having this problem. The last time i had to snoop in the park i didn't get that option so i just canceled the case and now i am having the same problem. It is so strange. Maybe i have to do something first?

Do you have a wish to snoop for clues or is it part of a case you're working on?  You have to be at a certain level before you can snoop at all, so if it's a wish your Sim has, perhaps he's just not at a high enough level yet.

Oh you have to be at a certain level! Yes it is a part of a case I am working on and it is also a wish. What level do you have to be on? I can not remember what level I am on at the moment.

Well, if it's part of a case, then your Sim probably has a high enough level.  According to Carl's Guide, it's at level 3.  Because it's part of a case, you should have a spy glass showing up somewhere on the lot where you're supposed to snoop.  Also, as gerrr00 mentioned, You should have the option to snoop when you're in map view.  You may want to take a look at the guide page I linked for you to see if there's anything that will help you.
