Sims 3 - Location of Game files
« on: April 28, 2012, 06:57:21 AM »
I'm trying to install Sim's 3, EPs and Stuff Packs on a new (to me) laptop.  I want to install everything on to the E: drive, which has plenty of space.  However, when installing the base game, the files are automatically installed in C:\Program Files.  The installation process does not give me an option of choosing where to install the game.

I'm installing EPs and Stuff Packs in order and got as far as Ambitions when I ran out of space.  So I copied the entire Electronic Arts folder from C:\Program Files to E:\Games.   When I tried to run the game from the E folder, an error message told my I needed reinstall the base game.   Is there a way to move files from one directory or another?  Or better yet, how can I choose the folder I want on installation?

Thanks for your help!

I think you may have to un-install the game and re-install it on the desired drive (you should have had the option to pick the drive at installation)
Not sure, but if you do this, I think your save files will still be in the My Documents folder on C drive.

That's what I thought at first, so I started over.  The base game automatically installed to the C: drive.

You can't browse the location? I thought it puts C in as the default, but if you browse, you can change it.

No browse option.  I can see the directory location flashing by as new files are installed, but at no time am I allowed to choose the installation directory.   I've tried this several times now with both Autorun.exe and Sims3Setup.exe just to make sure I wasn't missing the option to choose directories.  No luck so far.

I found the problem -- setup gives the option of Typical or Custom setup.  I've ignored custom because I thought that meant choosing pieces of the program to install.  Instead, all custom setup does is allow you to choose your file location.  Doh!

Thanks for your help anyway!

Ahh, yes. Been a while since I installed the game, I forgot about custom setup. Glad you worked it out.
