If my sim is a writer, will she earn much money?
« on: April 01, 2012, 09:17:26 AM »
Right now I have a family with six children and I have my favorite with which I'm going to make my active when she ages to YA. Her lifetime wish is to be an acclaimed author. She's a child right now and already has level 5 skill in writing and level 2 skill in painting. She's started her first novel also. I was just wondering, is it smart to have her get another career as well or will she bring in bundles of cash from her books?

Once she starts turning out higher value books, you can bring in lots of cash.  A writing challenge last year showed that Children's books generate a lot of money for the time it takes to write them, and you can likely turn out several in one week, and then collect a lot in royalties from them.

I have a sim that is a writer and one that is both a writer and artist, they are both making lots of money.

My suggestion is to have her read as many of the books as she can, it helps in her writing.  Read a book in each genre and then go back and read another one in each genre.  That way, by the time she is an adult, she will probably write better novels.  I didn't do any formal testing, but it did seem that an earlier sim author that I had deleted hadn't read any of the books and it took her longer to get the good pay and have best sellers.

Writers can absolutely make a lot of money if you stick with it.  At first, it will seem like it's not worthwhile and I actually came close to losing my Immortal Dynasty when the 8th generation couldn't get to level 10 of the writing career.  But I was on a time limit and didn't manage him as well as I should have.  Like folcon said, the children's books proved to be the best money makers in last year's writing challenge.  I've had decent luck writing humor and satire, as well.

It depends. I have a sim who is a writer and she makes a lot more than her girlfriend, who is a painter. If you stick with it, it'll be easy to get rich off of writing. You'll be able to support a household of eight sims on writing alone. Just remember, you have to have multiple books written in six weeks. You can't write a book, wait for the royalty to end after six weeks, then start writing another one.

I think it depends on the skill, and how many books you can spit out in a certain period of time.  You have it going good if she has that skill level as a kid!  Also, don't forget about the book royalties.
