I have made some adjustments to the Specifications, you will now see an Optional Specifications: section, these are just optional things that you may or may not include, these may give you extra guidance on what sort of theme is in mind for the contest. Anything under Specifications: is a must do and to be considered all of those options must be ticked off. The Contest is now Running again, anyone may make any changes or alterations to their Entry including Ratchie. We will extend the Deadline of this contest as well to make up for the lost time.

Lot Size: 30x40 (used 17 Maywood Lane in Sunset Valley)
Description:
2BR/2Bath  This two story home is heavily inspired by Japanese architecture and design.  Color choices are simple, based on natural, neutral tones or heavy contrasts.  The main rooms are mostly large, open spaces where the kitchen flows to the living area and is open to the study up above.  The second floor opens to a screened porch which in turn has access to the gardens in the back.  There are two garden fountains and a pond in the back yard.  The patio space has its own cozy little fire pit where Sims can enjoy the serenity of the nearby gardens.

Oh and for anyone who opts to download it, see if you can find the cute bunny radio from Generations.  I couldn't resist putting it somewhere.

House: Silken Retreat

Lot Size: 20x20
Bedrooms: 1
Bathrooms: 1.5
Furnished Cost: 69,795
Items From: WA, LN, Gen. No Store content.

On behalf of our Foreign Treasures division, Yellow Lily Realty & Construction would like to present the Silken Retreat. This house is perfect for the single Sim or Sim couple looking for a relaxing, Asian infused home just big enough for 1 or 2. Our builders decided to take up the challenge of building on a smaller lot in an attempt to increase charm.

From the Curb: Here you can see there is room to park your car on the lot, no need to settle for street parking. The front gate opens to reveal a stone pathway (built from stone imported from Asia) around to the left where it leads into a quiet front courtyard and up to the front door.

First Floor Layout: Here is your copy of the floor plan for the main level of the house. The Kitchen and Dining areas are separated from the Living Areas in true Asian fashion, but remain connected by a raised walkway. Notice the half bath directly off the kitchen, perfectly situated for those last minute bathroom trips before catching the car pool. The reading area of the Living Room has the stair access up to the second floor master bedroom and bath.

Second Floor Layout: Here is your copy of the floor plan for the second floor. A sectioned staircase divides the space into a sleeping area and a dressing area, also note the full bath to make morning and bedtime hygiene a breeze.

Kitchen/Dining: Decorated in calming blues and yellows, this small Kitchen and Dining feel anything but small. The open concept of the Kitchen provides ample space for meal preparation, even when visiting friends what to help out. The Dining nook provides a cozy dining feel for every meal. It also provides just the right view of the front street so you can see the carpool coming.

Half Bath off the Kitchen: Whether you need a quick freshening up when the doorbell rings or a bathroom break while spending the day out in the backyard, the spacious half bath off the Kitchen is perfectly situated for this. No need to run over to the Living Room and up the stairs to the second floor Master Bath on mornings you forget to brush your teeth before breakfast.

Living Room Gathering Area: Across the walkway you will find the Living Room of the home. On the right is the Gathering Area where you can unwind after a long day watching the Llamas defeat the rival team from Simcity, or popping in a home movie. The display pedestals are the perfect place to show off your work, hobby, or travel accomplishments.

Living Room Reading Area: On the left is a warm Reading Area. The fireplace provides the crackles and dancing flames that make any book a masterpiece to read. The built-in book shelves have plenty of room for your required work readings, Consignment Store finds, and foreign marvels.

Master Bedroom: Walking through the Reading Area and up the sectioned stairs takes you right into the Master Bedroom. Half walls instead of railing around the staircase provide increased privacy and elegance. Imported from Asia, the bedroom furniture (bed, side tables, desk, and chest of drawers) was handmade by locals commissioned just for this project, these pieces are truly one of a kind.

Master Bath: Located on the other side of the stairs, the Master Bath is big enough for 2 and tranquil enough for 1 long bubble bath soak.

Backyard Zen Retreat: Whether you live in the busy city of Bridgeport or the calm stillness of Riverview, this backyard is the perfect oasis from nosy neighbours, traffic, and life in general. The park bench provides a spot to sit back, close your eyes, and listen to the trickle and splash of the 3 fountains and the whisper of the breeze through the bamboo trees. There is plenty of ground space for meditation and an easel for the art-inspired.

We here at Yellow Lily Realty & Construction hope you enjoyed this tour of our Silken Retreat. If you wish to own this home please visit the Silken Retreat page (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php?topic=7099.msg147168#msg147168) of our corner of the Swap Shop.

I decided to not enter this one because I had no clue about Asian themes  ::)

Sassysimmer: It was great, but I would have used more terrain paint and the first floor was a bit empty.

Schipperke: Also could have used some terrain paint, and the furniture on the balconies/decks seemed a bit scattered. Could have made the outside wall colors a little more tan as well.

Lynley1248: Great! Maybe some chairs on the decks, but otherwise, this one was golden!

VampirePlasma: Nice! Might have not have not used brick on the outside of it, but that's just a pick in a otherwise great house  :)

Chuckles_82: Wow, in my opinion, you're better at building then me  ::) Congrats!

Yay to everyone! You're all winners in my book  :D

I would appreciate feedback too.

Alright then for the people,so far,who requested feedback.

Sassysimmer I loved the layout of the first floor it was decorated beautifully.I felt that the ground floor was too empty there was far to much empty space for my liking. The landscaping was perfect and it looked so relaxing I didn't really like the roof it looked slightly princess castle to me.

Vampire Plasma I liked the inside the interior looked peaceful and tranquil. I did not like the outside it was too modern for my tastes. I also felt that perhaps your pictures did not do your build justice.

Shipperke I loved the design and the placement of the furniture but could you please please please paint a wall or two I really do not like all the grey. I was not overly keen on all the different shapes and styles of windows. I liked the simplicity of the garden it looked relaxing.

Lynley This had such wonderful kerb appeal. I could just imagine my Sim sitting in the gazebo on a warm spring evening having a glass of nectar and chilling. The rooms were well laid out my only slight problem is that it was slightly too dark.

Lilygirl I loved the design of the house the landscaping was superb. While I liked the layout of the rooms I didn't feel that the decor said Asian to me. It was beautiful but it just wasn't saying Asian.

Samoht Again the landscaping and shell of the house was beautiful. I really liked the interior the choices of furnishings and placement of furniture was spot on you have an eye for design. The green got a little overwhelming especially the bathroom.

Thanks very much for the comment, Rachel.  I don't think you and I are ever going to agree on colour!  I like neutral backgrounds for the art that my Sims will create, but in this case the walls and floors were actually a very muted purple, which I thought was really a lot of colour!  And I agree with what you said about the windows.  I really couldn't get the facade of the house right.

Thanks, I didn't know what to use on the outside so  :P

Yep, I can't take good pictures. I did it modern because now days China/Japan is very modern, that's what I was thinking. But I still of course wanted to keep the peaceful inside. Glad you liked it.

Gogowars I loved the garden the area next to the pond was divine. If Sim me lived there that is where myself and Mr Ratchie would be(Mr Ratchie loves to fish he would be so happy). The colours and patterns you used throughout were great a perfect mix of tranquil and vibrant. I wasn't overly keen on the shape of the build it felt slightly too long.

By the way I hope I don't offend anyone with my comments I am trying to be critical but fair.

Congratulations Chuckles!

I'd appreciate comments on my build, but please no negative comments on the bamboo in front. I absolutely hate it, and I wish I hadn't put it in. (EDIT: I realised that after the contest closed)

First, Congratulation Chuckles! That was one amazing build!
Thanks for everyone who vote for my own built - it was built in a short period of time to calm me down (my mom was at the surgery) and I wasn't even shore I'll be able to upload it with problematic internet connection, but I'm happy I did and would appreciate comments. I would try and make less built/more garden/open space and try some more patterns. And make better roof if possible!

Ratchie - I love the roof! Interesting A shape and nice interior, only outside looked more French then Chinese. I love the bold colors on the first floor and gentle choices for kids rooms!

Vampireplasma - even if rules didn't stated traditional asian look, your wonderful modern built didn't look Asian from outside. Also, inside and outside didn't really match, but separately they look amazing. I want that livingroom in my RL home!

Chuckles - I'm in love with that garden and all the water features around the house. You used patterns up to perfection. It is really a deserved winner.

Schipperke, I wasn't shore if I do or don't like the red door, they are controversial for shore! I'm with others, using wall papers that have more segments, and adding more patterns and colors would make the big difference. In pictures I can't see any pink, there, it looked grey. I love your zen rock garden with sand and rock, and rooms look well layed. You're becoming better with every build!

Caliban - I LOVE your built! I really can't find anything to critic about it. Really, I love it!

Sassysimmer - what a cute built! From the bridge to interesting room shapes and colorful patterns, it is just too cute. Even those little details like splashes of differently colored flowers or use of different patterns on different walls, and my favorite is inside balcony (not shore what is the name for that). Very cute built!

Gogo - I'm in love with the pond garden as well. It's just perfect! Choosing turquoise was a bold decision, but I like it. I'm not shore if it match the red and if there is too much going on inside with pattern. Bedroom is amazing too, but I guess turquoise is making it look more Egyptian than Chinese. Still, I'm in love with this built!

Seabody, you took pictures from interesting angles and it looks wonderful. There is a lot of space there, and dark blue was interesting choice, I also like that you used lot's of paneling. Garden in the central area seems a bit empty but the general idea is great.

Lynley, as always, I'm in awe with your builts. One tiny little thing - maybe more light in the kitchen, it seemed a little dark. I love the curved bridge, and well, everything else!

Lily, similar as with Lynley, your builts are no such a high level that looking for anything to critic is very hard. It is very beautiful, but I guess that color choice made it look more Egyptian style than Chinese.

Samoht - Your Jade Palace ir really looking like a palace! Jade color is maybe dominating too much and house is hidden behind the trees, but other than that, I love it!

Thank you Anushka and ratchie for the feedback! I can say the garden is also my favourite part! I can agree about the flaws too.
Time for feedback! (I'm going in the order of submission not ask for feedback) Also, in some of the posts I say 'needed dirt around the pond'. For some reason I think ponds need some sort of terrain paint around them so do not take this personally.

@ratchie:I really liked the inside but the bedrooms lacked an Asian feel. The exterior is great except I think a few dirt terrrain paints and flowers around the pond were needed but otherwise, really nice build!

@VampirePlasma: I thought the exterior was really nice but I think using a bit more of the wood and less of the brick would've been a good choice. The pond did need a little dirt terrain around it. I don't know what but I was in love with the interior!

@Schipperke: The name made me laugh! Mainly the dog food part! Now onto the house, the front didn't really look very Asian but the plants you chose made it look more Asian. The backyard is really nice but, again needed dirt around the pond. The interior had the Asian furniture but the walls and floors were really bare and didn't go with the furniture.

@caliban: I really liked your build and can't think of anything bad about it! I even got some inspiration for my submission!

@Sassysimmer:When I look at the house form the front it just says Asian and Beautiful! The inside also definitely was Asian just a little bare in some areas of the hosue.

@Seabody:I agree about the trees in the front. Definitely should've been placed around the sides. The house was beautiful and Asian-looking but I think it's the landscaping that let you down. Also, what are the traps for?

@Anushka: I can't say anything about your house but fantastic! It was my favourite!

@Lynley1248: Just like Anushka's, beautiful!

@Lilygirl: This house was not beautiful  or fantastic, it was possibly better! The only bad parts were the areas that looked a little Egyptian.

@samoht04: The house hit the theme perfectly! I did like the Jade colour but there were areas of the home that needed a different colour.

First of all thank you for those who commented on my build hopefully that will help me improve with my building skills.

Caliban The layout of the rooms were well thought and flowed nicely. The landscaping was divine and again I could imagine Sim me there. The only small problem I had was that it looked a little too dark an extra lamp or two would have worked wonders.

Anushka The house had definite kerb appeal I loved the patterns and colours you used for the walls. It has a very expensive feel to it and I could imagine some rich Sim having it for a vacation home.

I think I was running out of money and needed some garden decorations. I beluieve traps cost $0, so I placed them in there.

Feedback:

ratchie: The exterior was missing something for me. I like the wallpaper, but I think you shouldn't have used vertical slats on all of them. With the back garden, some sand in the rear garden could've created a zen feel. I don't think there's much, if anything, wrong with the interior. I only think there was a bit too much red. My lounge is almost all red, and it isn't exactly attractive.
VampirePlasma: I can't find much to fault. Only thing I can see is the dragon fountain. If you had placed it closer to the water, maybe in the water with MOO, it would look better.
Schipperke: The walls were a little plain for me. That's it.
Caliban: I can't fault it.
SassySimmer: The Living Room is a little bare. I would probably add in an easel or a chess table.
Gogowars329: I'm not sure whether I like or don't like the blue in the living room. :-\
Anushka: Again, I can't fault it.
Lynley: Again, no faults. Can you please put up an arched bridge tutorial? Mine look like demented monkeys. I tried to do one for this contest, but no. It looked horrid.
Lilygirl: Perfection in the Sims.
Samoht04: The exterior is brilliant. I think you overdosed on Jade just a tad though.

It's actually quite amazing, this surge of growth among the builders in this community.  I've watched so many learn and improve over time, and so many new faces come out of the woodwork to demonstrate their ability.  It's all quite enriching to see.
