May I have a little clarification please.

I have been trying to place lots on the beach but apparently they can't go there, so is it okay to use one of the lots that are near the beach even though they are not on it?

Also, I am a little confused on
Quote
Beach views from the front of the lot (like in SV)

I am not sure if this mean the entrance to the house should be on the beach side of the property of that it should have beach views.

Kind Regards
KJ

You can build it on Land if you want to, which may be best for Terrain Issues on placing a Lot through the World Editor. Seabody used Recurve Strand I think for his. By Beach Views you really just have to have a view of the Beach, so whichever way the Beach is from your Lot it needs to take advantage of the views.

Question, we are not allowed to use the freebies they give you in The Sims 3 Store for uploading memories?

I'm going to say No because they are not exactly freely available to everyone. They are more of a limited thing for people who upload memories.

Sorry, for asking to much questions. The house has to have a butlers place?

Ask as many questions as you need. Yes, whether you do a Shed, Attic, Room or Basement is up to you, it really only needs a Bed for the Butler and the rest is up to you on how much you do for the Butler.

Thanks. Am almost done with landscaping so then I'll decorate and save space for the butler. Here I go again.  :-\ So 3 sims plus NCP, Butler. The butler does not count for the 3 sims of the ages we chose?

Since Lily put the specs together I am not sure whether she meant that the Butler was included in that 3 Sims or not but to be on the safe side I would say have the 3 Sims of any Age and then add another Bed for the butler. Lily is away till the 15th I think so she will be back in time before the Contest ends. If you submit before she gets back and what she was meaning in the specs is different to what I have said then feel free to change it.

Tom I'm not sure how to make a link from the Swap Shop to here.  (Computer illiterate)  Is it ok if I post using the "Additional Options" for the download?  I can also put it in the Swap Shop although it seems redundant.  Here's my "villa" by the sea.

I oriented my house on a created lot next to Recurve Strand beach, facing the lighthouse out at sea.  I love that view!

House Name:  A Room With a View

Lot Size:  30x20

Price Unfurnished:  $55,880

Price Furnished:  $99, 979

Required:  Outdoor Living, Ambitions, Late Night, Generations, World Adventures, Base Game
Free Store Item: The Dragon's Vase (http://store.thesims3.com/setsProductDetails.html?categoryId=&scategoryId=12491&index=0&productId=OFB-SIM3:18596&pcategoryId=&ppcategoryId=12490) from the Explorer's Loot set.

Description:  The best view in Sunset Valley in my opinion.  A panorama of the ocean, beach, mountainous area, and best of all, the lighthouse.  Imagine sitting up high on the huge wrapping deck, sipping your frosty juice, and watching the sun set past the lighthouse.  What could be more relaxing or peaceful?  In a party mood?  The extremely modern barbecue area and juice bar will make this a party to remember, and plenty of room for dancing, star gazing, or just chilling.  Inside the comfortable bedrooms with their own, private baths beckons after a hard day of sitting in the sun.  If you're in a techno mood, there even is a couple of tvs.  The kitchen is fully updated with modern appliances just waiting for your 5 star chef to do their thing.  Your athlete or artist has a place in the sun as well, on the upper deck.  Crank up the genius level with a star gazing telescope and an unobstructed view.  Go for a dip in the charming pool, or sit in the shade under the palm trees while reading the morning paper.  A home you'll never want to leave.  Check out our brochure below to see how great it really is!

1. Rear of house:

2.  Two deck areas, top of house.

6.  Small "garden with view" area, lots of palm trees!:

7.  Pool and "front door", it's just a gate to the stairs but limits paparazzi entrance!

8.  Bird view of pool:

9.  Pool with view:

I had so much fun building this one but really needed more money to do it up the way I wanted.  Those columns are expensive!  Once the contest is over I plan on upgrading it and placing it on a larger lot as well.

It would be better if you didn't, it will make your Build easier to find rather than hunting through the Contest Threads to download it. If you post it in the Board as a seperate thread, then I can link to it for you.

Thank you Tom.  By the way, that tutorial was excellent!  Pam also pm'd me and told me how to do a link.  DUH!
I already knew how to do that but somehow thought it was more complicated so wasn't doing it.  Using "Additional Options" makes it so much easier too.

Title: Re: Building Contest 2 - A Beach Villa
Post by: Lilygirl on September 13, 2011, 11:55:36 PM
Sorry for the late answers to your questions, guys, I was away on holidays.

1) Your lot does not need to be built on sandy terrain or have the sandy terrain paint applied to it. Yes, this may be the first impression the name 'beach house' gives but it's not stated under "Other" as a requirement. I've added this to the rules for clarification.

2) I've removed the line about "beach views from the front of the lot" as it's just adding confusion instead of clarification as intended. So, just forget that that existed.

3) I've also re-worded the number of Sims requirement to hopefully make it more clear and less confusing. Your lot needs to have beds for a minimum of 3 Sims (any ages) plus a Butler, the Butler is an extra bed.

4) @ Joria: I added the link to your Swap Shop thread for your submission. The reason for creating the Swap Shop thread is to make it easier for people looking for houses to download, the Swap Shop is a more obvious spot to find download links and prevents people from needing to wade through each contest thread to find the link(s) they're looking for. The Swap Shop was created to provide a space for people to share their creations and we wanted to maintain that.

Due to feedback, the requirement for a beach view as been added back in. All this means is that from inside the house, Sims must have a view of the beach from a window/deck/whatever. Sorry for being too hasty in deleting this requirement, I thought removing it would simply remove perceived confusion and not actually matter but I was wrong, my apologies.

I wasn't sure if I was supposed to put all the pictures and information in this thread as well as the thread I started for the beach house I made.  It seems a bit repetitious to do it all twice, but I will if that's what's wanted.  Otherwise, here's my entry:  http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php?topic=6894.0 (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php?topic=6894.0)

You are supposed to post the download link in the thread you post and then the Entry Details with a link to that Swap Shop Thread here. All you need to do is copy/paste from that Swap Shop Thread to here and then add a link to that thread for the download. The Swap Shop Threads are for downloads and the Entries in this thread are for the Contest.

Many of you know that samoht04, the Building Challenge Coordinator, is working from a remote location and it's not easy for him to post.  At his request via private message, I've locked the poll for now.  There seems to be some confusion about the requirements of the challenge that need to be straightened out.  Once everything is worked out, the existing votes will be erased and everyone will be asked to vote again.  This is still a work in progress as we strive to make sure that everything is handled fairly, so please bear with us.

Due to a confusion about which specifications are required and which are optional, ZapKid's submission will be added to the poll for voting. All votes will be reset so those who have already voted may vote again.

@ ZapKid: Please accept our deepest apologies for the confusion and turmoil this may have caused for you over the past couple days. We are delighted to include your submission in the voting process.

Congratulations Lynley! You're house was a beauty! I loved it!
I'm up for feedback/comments!

@Zapkid: Very nice house! The backyard area needed a bit of terrain paint around some of the stuff. Also that little Asian Garden Object doesn't look right there.

@caliban: Really beautiful house. It definitely fits the theme of 'Beach Villa'. The colours are great contrasts!

@Vamp: The pool part of the front looked bare without any windows, but you filled that space up with a flower bed. I really liked the idea of an indoor pool. My favourite room was the Master Bedroom. You really got the colours right in there!

Sorry if I've missed yours but I don't have the time right now and I will come back later.

Congratulations, Lynley!  Your house was awesome.  When I first saw I said to myself, this one is the winner and I was right!  There isn't one thing I would do differently.

However, there is a LOT I would do differently in my own house!  So any advice/criticism is welcome.

I personally think you all were winners.  Each one came up with a truly unique idea and yet met the theme of the competition.  I can hardly wait to see what you all come up with the Asian contest!  I had to bow out of that one due to having some serious other projects in hand, but I know you all won't disappoint.

Congratulations Lynley!

@Schipperke
I absolutely love that pool! For the life of me, I cannot shape pools properly, and I find that they look like demented monkeys. I think the pool is possibly my favourite part of the all the submissions, and certainly your house. (Yes, I'm Excitable today)

@caliban
Your house is marvellous! My favourite part is probably the colours - I'm going to download that house once I check the content. I want everything in it!

I'd appreciate feedback, and the feedback I've given above is just to two of my favourites. I'll give more soon.

Zapkid I loved the colour scheme you used but for me the modern design did not work for my idea of what a beach house should look like. The interior was amazing and flowed really well.

Samoht I loved the natural feel of the wood and the blues that you used throughout. All the extra design touches were very well thought out and you could tell that you didn't just stick a vase on a table for any old reason you put it there for a purpose.

SassySimmer. The interior of the house was beautiful and the rooms flowed together nicely. I felt the shell of the house was too blocky and square I would have liked to see more landscaping.

Imagleek. The interior was so natural and peaceful very well done. Again I was not a hundred percent sure of the modern build but that is just my personal preference.

Grimsoul I loved the design of the house the kitchen in particular was stunning. Some of the rooms however felt cluttered like you had added just a little too much.

Lynley Again not that fond of the modern style but the interior is amazing. The choice of colours and the layout of each room is so well thought out I love it.

Caliban This build had great kerb appeal it looked how I imagined a beach house should look. I felt the interior was a little too dark maybe a more muted colour palette would be better.

Joria I loved the basic idea but, sorry,it almost felt unfinished like you ran out of money or something. I loved the colour scheme except for the green chairs near the dinning area they just seemed a little random and didn't really go with the look of the house.

Schip I loved the shape and design of the house. I would have liked to see more colour on the walls and floors it looked a little grey and bland to me.

ratchie Yes I am going to critique my own build. I assume that is alright. Moments after I had pressed the send button I thought to myself it looks unfinished I could have done so much more with regards to landscaping and those little extra design touches. I should have planned my money better I was well under budget so I have no excuse. My favorite part was the colour scheme and open plan design.

I think I covered everyone so far who has asked for critique.

I am open to critiques from you all.

Rachel

Post by: xFezIsAFreakx on October 02, 2011, 10:51:03 AM
I shall give my comments. :) I think everyone did exceptionally well in this particular contest and gosh, I am so jealous of all your building talents! I had real trouble narrowing my favourites down to just three! :D I don't think I've criticized very much at all in these comments, because every build was just so awesome!

Seabody's Seaside Style: I thought this villa was cute and it just looked 'right' on Recurve Strand. I thought some of the colours you used on the inside were a little random. For example, the pink in one of the bathrooms kinda didn't seem right to me. I would've put in a sort of sandy shade of yellow instead of the pink.  I really liked the sort of neutral browny wooden colours the place had, it all went very well. I think the outside of the house was kind of bland and repetitive, if you know what I mean, and I wasn't too keen on the rectangular shape but it is still a very pretty beach villa that I'd like my own sims to live in. :)

SassySimmer's Sea Shell Shores: Although I wasn't keen on the rectangular shape, I loved the balcony and the little fountain bit you included on the bottom floor. The back of the house looked stunning and I adored the modernistic feel to it. The inside felt very, very spacy but I still kind of liked that because it made it feel more airy and not too much of a home and more of a holiday home which is what it was supposed to be. The butler's quarters were very cute. I loved the half walls with the wave in them, it was a cute touch. I think the top floor felt repetitive again, and I think you could have tried to make the rooms more individual, but it was still sweet. The basement party room was an awesome touch, as well, so I loved how you thought outside the box there. The whole home felt like a big party-at-the-beach sort of thing, proper awesome! :D

Vampire Plasma's Palms Royale: This was such a cute beach home! I could instantly picture any sim family living there. I also loved the idea of an indoor pool, and I could picture getting my sim to invite a few friends and use the buffet table and have a little party! It gave a proper holiday feel. The second floor was so lovely as well. Everything was positioned just nicely. The living room bit was very posh and high-class. I love it when a house that isn't overly-modern is still able to look high-end! I liked the matching woods and the green walls. They just went perfectly. The two bedrooms seemed to compliment each other. It was just such a lovely family beach home and I loved how it had that family feel as well as being somewhere you could send your sims for a little party. :D

Choccolatee's Charlotine: I don't think I could even find fault with the front of the Charlotine. The landscaping was lovely, the little seating area on the left of the house was adorable, and it looked just right with those palm trees. The back was really cute. I loved the shade bit overhead the pool. After all, we need to protect our sims from sunburn! :D I'm a sucker for the usual light-blue-and-light-wood modern look that most go for when designing the interior of modern homes, and the fact that this colour scheme went so perfect with the theme of beach house just made it look even better! It felt really inviting and lovely and bright and welcoming. I liked the bridge thing over the pool because it made the place look more unique instead of just putting a square of water, as I would. When I looked at the overhead shots I did notice that the place was very spacy, again, especially the first floor. But as I said before, the spaciness of these beach houses felt right because it is a holiday home. It looked even more outstanding at night. I particularly reckoned this house felt just right in Sunset Valley.

Joria's A Room With A View: This home looked so strange to me, as in how it was built. That's why I loved it. It defenitley was not the image I'd have in mind when thinking of a beach villa, and that made it even more striking! The pool on the bottom looked wonderful, and again, the house being on top of it provides shade for our sims! :D The house was on the columns which made it seem more grand and striking and wow. When I scrolled down, expecting the interior to not have very much because the outside was so good, I must have gasped, because it was packed! In a good way! There were no bits I could look at and think 'Well, you could have put something there.', etc. It was just awesome! I liked the colour scheme, and the red of the master bedroom and the bathroom beside it. The stairs in the middle of the pool that had the gate that limits papparazi striked me as such a cool touch! I was just astounded by this build.

Gogowars329's Crimson Saforia: This was different from the other houses in that the outside was dark. I don't think I liked that about the house, and I don't like the repeated windows. I did like the little seating bit up near the door on top of the steps, that was sweet, but again the bright crimson kind of looked too gloomy for a beach house. The inside was much better and brighter. I liked the pool shape. The little square with the two loungers could use a little barbecue thing, I think that would look cool. The inside ovrall was very sweet and gave quite a few hints of luxury, but I think if the colours were lighter and brighter then it would look more beach-y. It was still a lovely build, though, and despite not going with the theme in my opinion, the colours did still work very well together. :)

imaGleek's Ocean Side Reserve: You've found my weakness! Modern houses! And gosh, doesn't a modern build look lovely on a beach? The walkway leading up to the front door lightened up by the blue was such a sweet touch I would'nt have thought of! Some of it looked bare on the outside but the inside makes up for it! The pool was a cool and quirky shape, the colours matched perfectly. The furniture was situated nicely. The view was awesome! How do you build this good? The only thing I'd say is that the outside needed more landscaping but hey! This was just so, so sweet and I loved it. A lot.

ratchie's Cosy beach house: This was nice. I think the house could have benefited from a flat roof, because it looks a little more towny than beachy in my opinion, but it was still lovely. Once again, I love the house-being-on-columns thing. Yey for shade!  8) The interior was so lovely and bright, as well, both upstairs and downstairs. The only thing I didn't like was what I mentioned earlier about it feeling towny. I think it would have benefited from some sandy terrain and perhaps being placed on the actual beach. It was a sweet family home, though, and it did still fit well in the town. :)

caliban's MIR Hacienda Palms: Wow! This was actually so amazing!! Both front and back made my eyes pop out of my head. The interior was a little muddled, colour wise, but the master bedroom felt perfect. The view was amazing, too. I would have perhaps lightened the colour palette a little and changed the colours of the interior but that would be it. A truly striking build.

grimsoul's High Tide: This was another sweet home, but the roof didn't feel right. Perhaps the colour could have been changed? The back of the house made me smile because of the neat layout. The inside of the house all went well together and I especially love the kitchen and the living area. It was sweet. :)

Schipperke's I Heart the Beach: Yey for the heart theme! I thought that was really creative. :) The ourside of the house was wonderfully landscaped. Don't even get me started on how much I love the pool! ;D The interior was also very bright and I liked the parts of the house that were light blue, white and black.  The only fault was that it felt too spacy, but I couldn't fault the studio and socialising area! It was lovely and very creative!

LegendaryPlunder's Beach Holiday: I would by this home for myself! Yey for this ultra-modern beauty! I just cannot find fault with it. I loved all the windows and the walls at the front, and the back was  WOW. The pool was lovely and I especially liked the lot you actually chose to build the house on. You're right, it does have lovely sunsets! The actual inside did not disappoint at all. My favourite part of the build was the beautiful sun deck! :D

Lynley1248's Modern Beach House: First of all, congrats on winning, and boy did you deserve it! I loved everything and I can't find any fault with it, apart from it feeling more concrete and city-like than beachy. It was amazing and you did deserve to win.

samoht04's Oasis Villa: I fell in love with this. The colours scheme of the interior was wonderful and the outside look of the house just couldn't be faulted. Nothing could. The landscaping was unbelievable, as well. It was all very, very awesome. :D

ZapKid's The Crashing Wave: Although the exterior felt bare, the interior was lovely. You did what you did best: Modern houses! :D I loved the top, especially, with the cute squares. It was very lovely and open and all flowed very well. Yey! :D

Thanks for the kind words xFezIsAFreakx.  I also don't care for ultra-modern style so it was kind of a stretch for me to do one that way.  I would never buy a modern-looking home for myself :P but they're kind of fun to decorate.  I tried to soften it down some of the squareness of it.  I know the tendency is to want to go ultramodern with the decoration of the modern house but I can't bring myself to do it all that way.  The one thing I do love about modern style is the huge windows.

Okay here I go, thanks as well to all the comments on my build!

Seabody, I think you'r pictures could have been better, I couldn't really see the first front shot, that tree got in my way. Also that Pink and Blue bathroom featured in what felt like 5 different shots, right near the middle. I think if you had experimented with the floorings and walls, just a slight change in colour or a different pattern/design would have added variety. I did like the sense of space in your house though which I thought really did go with the theme, the colours theme was good as well.

SassySimmer, I liked the sort of mediteranian feel to your house, with the colours. Well that's the vibe I got, Lol. I pretty much liked everything inside, but that carpet, I just think it should have been wood or not that white it really didn't work in my taste.

VampirePlasma, Your House was great on all of my specs, I can't really find anything to fault that is worth mentioning.

Choccolatee, Loved the outside but again with my dislike of interior walls being the same in all rooms! I just don't like it so that is my main fault, I think you ran out of money for decoration but if you had those extra funds it really would have been great!

Joria, I liked that you put the House on stilts, and had the pool surrounding the Spiral Stairs, that was a cool idea. Other than that all I can really say is that there was too much wood, it needed a rug or something?

imaGleek, Everything was great, but you also did that same interior walls/floors which I really don't like, lol.

ratchie, I'm trying to decide if you used Create-A-Style or not, I don't think you did but if you did it would have really added something to your house, which was really cute.

caliban, I just loved it, can't find any faults.

grimsoul, I really like the Symmetery, also that little gazebo thing on the deck was a good touch, the inside was nice and I liked the angles.

Schipperke, I loved this one, just one thing, you can probably guess by now if you've been reading all my comments, I just don't like the same floorings/walls used. It just doesn't work for me. Also I didn't really see the point in the Nectar Cellar and I thought it could have been money better spent?

LegendaryPlunder, What can I say? Amazing pictures to show off your build, I thought all the rooms worked well and it fit the contest well.

Lynley1248, You won, I loved it, I almost knew you'd win from when you posted it was a beautiful house.

ZapKid, I didn't like the Window placings, it seemed odd to me. I liked the colours used but didn't get the holes in the roof.

\\Samoth, thanks that means a lot coming from a great builder like you.

\\First off, Thanks. I loved yours too. I couldn't agree more. The pool was very bad, I had built the house way to back and I realized there was no space for the pool so that was me thinking fast. I didn't like a it alot but I tried making it a bit better. The parking lots, yeah, I agree. I was thinking about it later, I said to myself "Is that even logical?" I don't really think when I build I just do it, I guess I gotta do more planning  :D

@Samoht: They're called skylights. You can see them in some modern houses around. (And since it doesn't rain/snow/weather in the Sims 3, why not?)

@Joria: Thank you! I do agree that it was boxy, I seem to have a problem with making unique floor plans  :-\

Thank you rachel, fez and thomas (just got your user name - slow to pick up lol) for your feedback (as well as those who fed back to me about my 'townhouse').  I have taken your comments on board and hopefully will start to apply them :)

I only every used to build houses as a place for my Sims to sleep, eat and skill up.  Never really thought of putting much effort into what it actually looked like until I stumbled upon this awesome forum  ;D
