Redemption Island is the location of "The Long Way Home" in my signature. The first couple of chapters play on a different map, which I build right before the story and kept adding to in CAW while I played. I believe that may just be the reason the world broke after a while. I thought it was just a little matter of a road I had forgotten to smooth out... but it turned out to be something worse. In the end, I had to remake the map. This first version won't feature in this thread though.
The second version was exported with all lots prepared for building and everything I thought I needed and kept the same throughout the rest of the story. The main problem was that I'd forgotten to add most of the spawners, so the household was rather limited in things they could fine around the world. At this point I didn't dare export the world again, so they made do with what they had (They're actually still doing so at this moment). I also didn't really decorate this second attempt as much as I had the first one... because I wanted it faster, so the story didn't have to wait for it, and because I was afraid to repeat the previous problem.
The reason I started to do the building as part of a story: I'd tried CAW before, but always got stuck in Edit In Game. I love building in Sims 3 (and spend most of my time actually in build/buy mode), but building this many right after another? And mostly community buildings at that? On top of that, the Edit In World building really isn't the same as building in the actual game.
This thread, however, isn't about Gabriel's story. It's about Redemption Island and its buildings (Mostly the buildings... as the island itself is pretty basic really. that's why I didn't put it in the CAW part of the forum. There won't be that much about the world itself.) The community buildings in here are actually my very first, as I've always stuck to residential lots so far. Really big residential lots mostly.
The custom content list with the buildings are there for me, so I can change those bits around before trying to upload them to the swap-shop.
For those who would love to download this once it's finished:
Redemption Island was made for the story and has been quite a learning experience for me (It still is, actually, as it's not even halfway done). It's my first working world, but there are some issues which make it so I won't use this map myself after Gabriel finishes his challenge.
The lack of spawners is one, of course. So far, it's the only functional problem I've encountered.
Terrain painting was done rather quickly, as I wanted the map ready for use and... Gabriel wasn't going to go too close to the mountains anyway. Some of the lots got cliffs on one of the sides when I smoothed out the road prior to the final export. I wasn't going to replace every lot just for Gabriel's story... and so all buildings are build on the lots the way they were. This makes for some odd height differences which I try not to show in the pictures.
I am going to add spawners on the map before uploading it, of course. I'll see about correcting some of the other issues as well.

Redemption Island
Mother has seen fit to take on Sim-form and show us around an uninhabited copy of Gabriel's Redemption island... (after all, someone needs to test this thing out ;) ).
A couple of shots of Redemption Island:
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g82/yruvian/Redemption%20Island/The%20world/Screenshot-394_zps9769a888.jpg)(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g82/yruvian/Redemption%20Island/The%20world/Screenshot-395_zps39819e95.jpg)(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g82/yruvian/Redemption%20Island/The%20world/Screenshot-396_zpsa7926141.jpg)
The island is split up into different divisions:
- Angel Hill (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,14466.msg279805.html#msg279805). This is the location where most of the story takes place: the hill on which Gabriel's home is situated, as well as some other lots that feature in the story.
- Angel Hill Extension District (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,14466.msg279808.html#msg279808). The extension of Angel Hill. In the first map, this was actually a lower level of the hill. In the new one, it's situated next to the actual hill and now also includes a beach property.
- The community centre (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,14466.msg279816.html#msg279816). This is where most of the regular islanders' lives take place. Most of the rabbit holes and town buildings are over here.
- The poor district (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,14466.msg279819.html#msg279819). Well. Poorer, any way. Small houses, a laundromat, the consignment building... and a few other community lots.
- The well-to-do district (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,14466.msg279831.html#msg279831). Large lots, large houses. Spa, pet store and other things mainly the wealthy need.
- The science/military district (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,14466.msg279820.html#msg279820). With its own graveyard and gym. Barracks for common soldiers, but the officers live in the larger houses, among the scientists.
- The Midnight district (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,14466.msg279827.html#msg279827). Entertainment and entertainers. Mostly Late Night/Showtime ventures over here.

Angel Hill District
When I made the map, I planned Angel Hill as a real millionaire Sim's residence.
Aside from the actual mansion, it has three other residential lots: The Gardener's Abode, The Gatekeeper and the Stablemaster. These three lots are supposed to hold the mansion's outdoor personnel.
During the story, the first two were build to provide Lemon Peel's younger brothers with housing close to the family, as Gabriel was loath to let them go too far away. The third was added when he understood he didn't think of horses when building the manor... and since the challenge requires him to max riding, he needed a valid solution for the problem at hand.

Angel Hill Extension District
The extension to the Angel Hill Residential Grounds are the home of some of the more... dirty or noisy activities. This is actually the more hidden part of the millionaire's private property, though these are available to the full community of Redemption Island, which isn't so for the buildings on Angel Hill proper. The Greenhouse is actually the first park Gabriel build, so a lot of the inhabitants of the island come here to socialize.
Angel Hill Extension as it is now (most of the buildings have been unlocked in the story, but Gabriel hasn't gotten around to building them yet.)

The community center
The center of Redemption Island, easy to reach from Angel Hill and all other districts houses the most basic of all buildings. The Festival Park in the middle is flanked by City Hall and the school. A few of the islanders make the center district their home.
This is actually the largest part of Redemption Island, both in the sheer amount of buildings and in used space.
A lot of the buildings still need to be build at this time, but it's starting to show some of its final size already. (I have changed all custom roofs to regular EA ones, because the light yellow didn't show up properly at a distance.)
The Peels actually lived in a small house next to what was going to be the gym before Mariska fell in love with Lemon. The households here aren't exactly poor, but they're nowhere near the wealth of the higher profile districts either.

The Poor District
Hidden from view by a mountain range, the poorer quarters of Redemption Island aren't really that far removed from the Centre, though no one really needs to see it if they don't want to. Even so, none of the houses are old, broken down or in any way defective.
After all, this is a poor district build by an angel, who neither cares nor understands the real class and wealth distinctions of Sim life. Like all residences, homes here have been build with the residing family in mind. If there are family members under the age of Young Adult, a small playground is added. The right number of beds and cribs, as well as chairs on the dining table should also be available. (There is however a large possibility of routing issues in houses with large households, like the Parson family.)
Lots in this district are small. So are the doors and windows used. Any furniture in these homes is cheap, but new and clean. However, I fear the colours chosen by Gabriel aren't that practical for most families, as he's known to use an overdose of white in everything. New residents should be warned about this little fact...

The Science/Military District
The scientists and military people on Redemption have their own part of the map. After all, who knows what kind of trouble those scientists manage to discover? There is evidence of mining on the mountains nearby... though no trace whatsoever of previous inhabitants. Redemption Island has attracted the interest of aliens long before the very first extra islanders moved here, so there may be trouble ahead.

The Entertainers District
The Midnight section of Redemption Island, a place where the night is more important than the day. There is room for the stars to stay close to their 'natural habitat'. Because of the levels of possible noise during the late hours, this district is actually located as far away from Angel Hill as possible. Only the poor part of Redemption may have the sound drift far enough on the busiest nights.
For now, there's only the lone Stadium (which obviously needs more windows... and a different roof).

The Wealthy District
Last, but most definitely not least, the section of the island which is reserved for the wealthiest of citizens. None of the truly wealthy have send in applications for the move so far, but that may just be a matter of time. (Actually... it's a matter of random.org, as I let that thing decide which district a new family will belong to. Same goes for size and type of family.)
Lot sizes here are decidedly larger than in the regular residential areas (the centre and the poor district ;) ). Furniture will be expensive, cars will be much more present over here... and often more exclusive as well. Millionaires, leaders of the free world and other utterly rich Sims will feel right at home over here. Community buildings represent those nice parts of life that need both time and money to really enjoy.

The two 'driveway' lots
These two lots are more or less mirrored images of each other.
They're really mostly around for looks, though both of them actually have a place to eat and can be used as small parks. The trees are Ornamental Pear trees, so they will lose their leaves during autumn. Evergreens may have been a better choice, but... it was Gabriel's choice.
The entrance is 'hidden' behind the white Hydrangeas.
The left wing, with Mother showing that it really is possible to cook here, though... she can't cook, really.
(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g82/yruvian/Redemption%20Island/Angel%20Hill/drive/Screenshot-10_zps3402f2fb.jpg)(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g82/yruvian/Redemption%20Island/Angel%20Hill/drive/Screenshot-8_zps0922bd91.jpg)(http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g82/yruvian/Redemption%20Island/Angel%20Hill/drive/Screenshot-9_zpsbefd5ea4.jpg)

Consignment building
My very first community building ever! Also one of the few buildings I was happy with after the very first try. The exterior look has been updated to accommodate the EA-roof.
The consignment building is situated in the Poor district of Redemption Island, and sports the regular small windows that are common for that part of the island.

The art gallery
Located in the community centre, the Art Gallery is a four-story building, though... the upper three floors are completely empty. The gallery can be used (and is in my case supposed to be used) as a gallery of art that's made by the family itself. I have decorated the ground floor with paintings and sculptures that can be bought, just to give visitors something to watch, as my artistic sims kept popping wishes to go to the gallery as soon as it was build.

Thank you both :).
I was really surprised when I got the first comments on my buildings on the story thread. It's because of that interest that I thought it may be nice to actually put all the buildings somewhere together, even those that don't really get any actual story time.

The Greenhouse
(This lot, the gallery and the consignment building are left over from the original Redemption map, as well as the homes for the Littles, Peels, Parsons and Songs and I think the swimming pool.)
The Greenhouse could be used as a residential lot for a fairy, if a fairy palace is added. The inner ring is safe from weather and plants won't go dormant, while the outer ring experiences any seasonal influences.
This little building has a very odd pricing problem. Every time I visit it, the price tag seems to go up. Even though in Edit Town, Buy/Build, it gives me the furnished lot value of 67.090 simoleons, the price tag if I mouse over it exceeds 600 million at the moment. This is also the price in the purchase real estate pop-up. Because of the pricing issues, I'm not going to upload this lot. Either I will have to rebuild it completely from scratch or it will just stay for the duration of the story. I think probably the latter, as there are a lot of buildings I still need to finish.
I didn't use any wildlife spawners, but the place is positively crawling with them. This isn't the only lot that's experiencing this problem either: the main residence has an actual plague of rodents at this moment.

It definitely needs all expansions, but is heaviest on objects from Showtime and Supernatural. Ambitions is needed for just about every lot for the White Hydrangea.
I'm not planning to give up on it... After all, Gabriel needs to get home, because... I already have his next mission in mind. Though that will have to wait for after I try an Immortal Dynasty ;). Of course, technical issues may kill the project, though I hope not.

Pool
One of the oldest buildings on Redemption Island. Sims can switch between the outdoor and indoor swimming pools without getting out of the water. To the side you can also see that the lots aren't perfectly aligned with the world. Most of that happened when I smoothed the roads before exporting. Considering I was actually just going to use it for the story, it didn't bug me enough to redo the lot placement. I just noted it for next time.
I did learn something from testing this place though: don't place the Inflato Aqualounge on community lots: any Sim using them will take them home. This includes NPCs. There were two of them when I send Mother to test out the place (and take the pics) and none when she left again. One of the NPCs had taken the other.

The Peel Residence
Located in the Community District, close to the swimming pool and in walking distance to both the school and the police station, the Peels' little home has everything its intended inhabitants need, including a small playground in the back and a small study downstairs. There is plenty of room to start a garden, adopt a pet or take up a hobby.

Thanks :). It's one of my personal favourites as well. It took several attempts before the spark of inspiration hit though. (I wish that same spark would hit with some of the other buildings though <.<.)

The Little Residence
Located in the Community District, right behind the school, the Littles may be a bit far away from the military base for some of the members, but with three school-going children, the town centre is a better place to live than the military quarters. When the Littles move into town, there isn't that much around yet. The only community buildings are a greenhouse, the pool and an art gallery.
The house has enough bedding for eight, enough dining space for 12... but there will be routing issues when all of them are home.

The Song Residence
Part of the poorest district of Redemption Isle. This house is one of the only single-story buildings on Redemption Island, but it is large enough for its three inhabitants.
Lot: 20x16 Residential
As soon as Orchestra grew into an adult, she persuaded her parents to leave their home in Bridgeport behind and move... anywhere. Redemption Island seemed as good a place as any to start a new life, away from the pointed stares and disapproval of the vampire community back home. The Songs hope Redemption will be a place where a witch and a vampire can be deeply in love... and where their 'misfit' of a daughter, the human Orchestra, will have a chance to make her dream come true.

The Parson Residence
Lot: 20x20 Residential.
The last of the original batch of buildings... and of the first four families to move to Redemption Island.
Direct neighbour of the Songs, the Parson family arrived on Redemption Island on the very same day. Jess and James Parson and their four children Kim, Pim, Wim and Tim left their old home behind after Jess' unfortunate accident. The meteor that took her live also took her sanity, as the young woman believed her husband would leave her for someone more... alive.
But James didn't abandon her. They had been boon companions ever since Kindergarten... and even though Jess may now be dead, she is still the woman of his dreams. Even though the shock and fear has turned her character upside down... He hopes to rekindle their relationship, regardless of the personality changes in his beloved Jess.

Redemption Academy
In the middle of the town centre, the school is easy to reach for all of the youngsters on the island. On the outside, it sports a complete playground and even a small soccer field for Physical Education.
I hope University will give us a better blackboard, but I did the best i could. A regular class room, one for music, one for art, one for science... and one for phys. ed. Other available rooms: a principal's office, a medical room (with beds for patients), a teacher rec room and toilets.
Lot: 64x40 Visitors allowed (because it's a nice play to socialize for the young ;) )

Did you change the school from when it was in the story?
-
A bit, yes.
In the story-school, there were only windows at the front, which bothered me when I made the overview pic for this thread. Most of the changes are in parts that weren't visible in the story though, like the interior, the back and sides (extra windows).
I changed the roof to a regular EA-roof and matched the exterior walls with the orange, as I do with all buildings in this thread. Maybe I should have gone for the light orange on the exterior though, like I did with the houses.
-
The Science Building
The first building in the Science/Military District. The Science building isn't completely furnished. This is one of the buildings that is only decorated in front of the windows. There isn't even a stair going to the top floor, though there is enough place to build one. I intended to complete its interior (as I did with the school), but there are so many more buildings I still need to build that I decided against it.

The Bolt Residence is the last of the second batch of buildings Gabriel build. The next set will consist of the Hospital, the Sheriff's office and the Military Base. Right now, I'm wondering whether I'll update the police station's interior or not. I have some ideas for that one and I really need to know whether it will fit...
-
Redemption Hospital
Located in the Community Centre, the hospital should be easy to reach from all sides of the island. The building also has its own helicopter pad on the roof, for those harder to reach areas or emergencies. (Of course, the helicopter pad is decorative only, as there are no helicopters in Sims 3. I just thought it would be a nice addition to the building.)
With room for only 7 patients, it's not a large hospital at all. There's only one doctor's office, a reception/waiting room area at the ground floor, but the kitchen and restaurant are in the basement (in the rabbit hole that is. I didn't think of adding a restaurant/kitchen until I started writing this, so the food will have to be taken care of in the actual rabbit hole.)
Lot: 40x19 No Visitors Allowed.

The Redemption Sheriff's Office
Located right next to City Hall (or... the lot where City Hall will be), the Police Office is a part of the Community Centre. With office room for a sheriff and deputy, a records/evidence room... and a jail cell, this little building has everything the guardians of Law and Order need on Redemption Island.
It's obviously a nice place to work, because in the story Lemon always stays after hours... usually to play computer games <.<.
(The cell, the evidence room and the larger office aren't there in the version in the story, though the smaller office is. I also added windows to the sides and back.)
Lot: 20x20 No visitors allowed.

Military Base
One of the main buildings of the Military/Science District, the Military base is build on a rather steep hill. It has its own training room and one large mostly empty room, as well as a large exercise yard for running laps. The privy building outside actually hides the staircase down to the rabbithole and doesn't have any plumbing available, though there is enough room for a toilet.

Predator Residence
The Predator family lives right behind the school in the Community Centre. Their house features an odd double roof-style. The playground for the three teens isn't surrounded by a fence and only sports 'toys' that can be used into adulthood.
A very open and light kitchen/living room takes up most of the house, but the four bedrooms are roomy enough to grow with the youngsters. The main problem with the house, according to young Eagle, is the single bathroom.

I like Hawk's (The teen) dress! The space in the military base looks awkward... Maybe you could have lockers, or a cafeteria, maybe a fancy receptionist desk!
I am also fond of the Police station.

Thanks :). I ran out of inspiration with the military base. I'll probably add some furniture to the empty space and update it here. I'm not sure what I'll do yet... I was planning on adding the cafeteria to the barracks lot, but it may be best if I add one to the base too.

Redemption Island Wedding Grounds
Lot: 17x40 Small Park
By lack of a better name...
For that dream day, the most romantic wedding to last a life time. Soft pastels all over to ensure that every tear shed is one of emotion, not because the surroundings hurt the eyes. The table is served at your convenience... There's food, a playground for both small and big... and even a hot tub to distract your guests while the pair of you make out behind the hedge... or sneak of to 'turn in early'. Rose vines flank our wedding arch for that extra touch of gentle romance.

Citrus Peel Residence (Or... The gardener's abode)
Ready for a couple which is expecting its very first child... with everything young Citrus could hope for. No longer would he have to share the sculpturing station... or fight for possession of the easels back at the mansion. Gabriel didn't add a playground... because he wanted to give Citrus and Mary reason to keep visiting the manor once their child is born.
The outside looks a bit like a smaller version of the mansion itself, but Gabriel has given thought to the wants and needs of the couple while furnishing the place. Hot pinks and yellow are everywhere...
Price tag: 69.776 simoleons, furnished. 45.030 unfurnished. (The household had 74.596 available at the time Gabriel started the house... and he set a limit of 70K to build and furnish the new home of his best friend.)
Lot: 20x30 Residential. The lot ends in a hill.

Redemption Spa
Lot: 20x15 Community lot
Even though the Spa looks like a two story building, only the ground floor is accessible. There's a reception desk, a bathroom and a sitting area/waiting room available on the ground floor.
This was the first of the rabbit holes I actually started furnishing instead of just decorating in front of the windows (as still shown in the Military base). The others were all furnished afterwards, though the version in my game has been updated to the furnished versions as well. All rabbit holes starting here have been furnished at the time of their initial build. (Though... I've had to correct a few of them for inaccessible stairs and the like after sending someone in.)

I would... but I've planned for a salon in the same district <.<. For a moment, I thought about adding a hot tub, but decided against it in the end. That wouldn't work because of everything on the lower floor anyway.
One of the things I've learned with Gabriel's challenge: some of the non-rabbit hole buildings are very appropriate to be put above rabbit holes <.<. A gym above the Military Base, a salon above the spa. (Right now, there's a mini-gym at the military base... and there's two more gyms planned on the island. And a dojo.) I don't know whether they'll actually count for both in the game though. I know you can combine rabbit holes (though there's none of that going on in Redemption Island either), but I'm not too sure about combining rabbit holes with non-rabbit holes. Guess I'll have to try it out.
My next world-project will build on all I've learned with Redemption Island though. I'm already gathering some ideas for it on the side.
And thanks :). I guess it shows I don't want 'my' boys to live in small crowded homes <.<.

Angel Hill Stablemaster
The third and biggest of the three 'servant' lots, the Stablemaster's house has room to sleep 4, though the bed rooms are only meant to sleep in. Most of the life of those residing here would most likely be spend outside.
There is enough room to house 7 horses, 5 dogs and a few cats (which, of course, isn't going to happen in a game, but this place would house the dogs and horses of the manor, so it makes sense to have that many.)
There are two actual horse stalls available for mares with foals... Cats, of course, would be expected to sleep with the hay, so they can keep the vermin out. (Just... don't tell my own three that I actually wrote that. They prefer to sleep on the bed or on the couch, thank you very much. Though they also love their cat condo.)
The stables have gained a floor from the version in the story because the horses couldn't get into them.

Jake and his younger wife Helga brought their two teenage girls, their horses and faithful dog Dolce to Redemption Island in an attempt to start a new line of horse breeding. This family isn't looking for redemption or a place to hide, but for a presently untapped new market for their own horses.
According to Jake, this new frontier may just be the thing to start the family of for life. Of course, if his daughters also happen to find love and happiness on the island, he will be even happier of the move.

Angel Hill Performance Park
As you can plainly see from the layout of Angel Hill, this lot was intended as a private lot for the inhabitants of Angel Hill to have their outdoor parties. Thanks to the subway station, Sims from all over the island can easily come and visit, even the poorest amongst them. Considering Gabriel usually invites every member of the community, this wasn't exactly a vain luxury.
This is the place where Orange became a singer, though it's been covered in snow in the story from the time of its build.
Does your performer need a gig? Does your band love to perform for an audience? Looking for a nice show to watch or just some people to jam with? Chances are you'll find it over here.
Lot: Big Park, 64x40

This is coming along nicely, I like the Stablemaster's home! it seems nice, and so does it's residents. I'm going to check out the story later today.
-
I'm updating the buildings on Angel Hill for University now... and getting rid of custom content in the process. Thanks to University, the parking spot decorations can be removed. I'll see about updating the pics as well, especially since I'll need to put up the fishing spot and Orange's place anyway.
Since I also have to update the overview pics of the Hill, I'm going to replace the manor with the current one from the story as well. I'll also update the overview of the community centre, as the only part there that isn't in the story yet, is the book store... which will appear in the story in the next chapter anyway.
I don't know whether I can do that today though, my right arm is killing me. I already added a couple of extra pain-killer stickers, so maybe it'll work out.

Orange Peel Residance (Or... the gatehouse)
Lot: 20x30 Residential. The lot ends in a hill.
Mostly a mirror image to the Gardener's abode. Ready for a couple which is expecting its very first child... with everything young Orange could hope for. A chemistry table, as both he and Lucky have always been more interested in potions than sculpting... and the ever-present easel. Of course, the inside is completely furnished in lilac and purple, the couple's favourite colours.
Because Orange has taken up cooking in his free time, Gabriel added an outside cooking and dining spot instead of Citrus' garden.

And that's all for Angel Hill, which is now nearly complete. If someone in the house dies, the cemetery will be added... and I'll be sure to finish furnishing the manor at that time as well (though... maybe only in my build-saved game. Depends on Gabriel's cash flow, really. I will remove the garden from that lot before adding its description, as... that's what the gardener's abode is for, really.)
I think the additions to the community centre will have to wait for now though. I'd really like to get some play time in before my arm makes it impossible. (And it will. Nothing new there.)

I love seeing your updates for Redemption Cove. What an impressive job you're doing with it!

Yay! I love looking at other peoples creations, knowing that I can only do small scale projects, I love looking at this. I like Citrus's house, and the fishing venue!

Redemption Island Registrations (City Hall)
Lot: 40x64
Because I've overestimated the amount of space I would need for a city hall, this building is largely empty. I guess I could have added a cafetaria or more offices. I like the exterior, but while decorating this place I got seriously bored. There's only so much fun in building office space.
This is definitely one of the buildings that has to be on a much smaller scale in my future projects. (The other main one I had the same issue with so far is the school, actually. I'd rather have a separate playground and soccer field somewhere close to it than on the school grounds.)

I was going to add the book store as well, but it seems the version I have in my build-save is the non-working one, so I'll have to copy that one from the story-save. Also need to copy the nectary, which will be one of the next batch of buildings, as I'm now working through the unfinished buildings of Angel Hill extended. The beach lot will be removed though, as will the road towards it (as soon as I can download an updated CAW), because it didn't work the way I wanted it. In my story-save, the only lot I have left to build over there is the Horse Ranch.
Another thing I've learned while doing this? I really don't like building parks of any type. Started the Festival Park, but my game crashed on me... Still have to start over and that was more than a week ago (before the last patch, actually).
