THE AUSTEN IMMORTALS

The Dangers of Travel Brochures

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
It was a dim, damp, gloomy day in Windenburg, and I was in the library, trying to find something interesting to read. I was browsing in the section devoted to Victorian essayists - Carlyle, John Stuart Mill, those guys -- when I noticed something colorful lying on the table.

COME TO SELVADORADA!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Come visit our sunlit gardens!

Our friendly citizens!

Our romantic waterfalls!

Our scenic vistas!

"Ah, if only I could," I murmured sadly. "It all looks wonderful."
"There is a way," a voice said behind me.
I looked over my right shoulder, then my left, but didn't see anyone.
"I'm a Watcher," said the voice.
"Which one?" I asked.
"I don't think that's relevant," she said.
"Well, I hope you're not one of those watchers who drops a dynasty in the middle when she goofs up or gets tired of her family."
The Watcher coughed. "It's not always easy finding the right narrator," she said. "But you -- being related to one of the greatest writers in history should count for something."
"I'm not a descendant," I warned her.
"But you come from the same gene pool. And you're named after one of her most endearing heroines, Elinor Dashwood. I think you'll do just fine."
"I haven't agreed yet," I said. "There are some conditions."
"Indeed?"
"No pollinators," I said. "And I don't want to marry someone who is noncommital, no matter how handsome his offspring will be."
"So no Don Lothario or J. Huntington," she said. "I can agree to that."
"And no helpers," I added. "I'd rather not work some poor elderly gardener or fisherman to his death, and I certainly don't want any painting slaves."
"That was mostly the 3.0 version," muttered the Watcher.
"And I want to illustrate the story on my own -- no cute photos that you've taken yourself."
"I might have to take some screenshots," said the Watcher. "You're not going to take your own wedding pictures, are you?"
"Some," I conceded, "but I get final say on what goes in."
"Good enough," said the Watcher.

The next thing I knew, I was in Selvadorada.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
In front of me was a thicket of brambles that I had to hack my way through. Luckily, I had a machete. Apparently it came with the villa that I'd rented.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The sign at the trailhead warned of many dangers, so I decided not to venture too far before nightfall.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I only had time to visit the waterfall, but it was even more spectacular than the brochure had shown.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Later that night I found out why the lease was so reasonable. Plasma bats descended from the ceiling as soon as I turned on the light.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I was outside and excavating early the next morning. I was so engrossed in my first site that I didn't even realize a snake had slithered past me until I saw Watcher's picture. I do hope it wasn't poisonous.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Watcher also had to get this shot of me luring the bees away from myself with a Guzmania pollenis flower ($25 at the marketplace and worth every simoleon).

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
It was late afternoon when I found the Royal Baths. Nobody else was around, so I went skinny-dipping, which helped me clean off a little. What with the heat, humidity, and having to wear long sleeves and stockings to protect against bugs, I was more than a little sweaty.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The scenery there was amazing, so atmospheric.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Through another doorway covered in brambles, I found a fishing spot. Not much treasure, and a crocodile (or alligator) was lurking in the water, so I didn't linger long.

And finally I came to the ancient Omiscan temple.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Inside, I made the acquaintance of a playful skeleton named Patella. From her pose, I'd guess she was something of a flirt when she was fully fleshed.

There were several entrances that were difficult to pass...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
...until you figured out how to remove their barriers.

I ended my stay in Selvadorada by giving thanks to Madre Cosecha, the Mother of the Harvest. And to the Watcher of course. ("No need to thank me," said the Watcher. "There's a foot of snow on the ground where I live, and it's been a vacation for me, too.")

Before long, I was back at home in Brindleton Bay, ready to get to work on completing 1 career, 2 aspirations (I made some headway on Archaeology Scholar), and 3 skills, acquiring 4 rewards, throwing 5 parties, making 6 good friends, completing 7 emotional whims, and putting 8 items in a collection.
Until next time, Elinor

What a wonderful beginning!
The combination of screenshots and paint-by-reference painting shots is quite stunning.
I'm glad that Elinor will be guiding us through the wonders of Selvandorada!

Oooh, shiny! And another Elinor Dashwood fan, too, though my favorite Austen heroine is Anne Elliot (that letter, though!!). I have been toying with the idea of doing an Immortal Dynasty with no helpers for some time. And I was planning to name my heirs after famous authors. Have you been in my brain? :)

I'm looking forward to reading this one.

Bestill my heart! An Austen-themed dynasty? Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors, and I'm so delighted that independent-minded Elinor is already living up to her namesake. She knows exactly how she wants things done and takes charge right away. Her requirements might make things a bit harder on her modest Watcher, but I think you're wise to let her steer her own ship. :)
I also love that she's doing much of her own photo-documentation. Very interesting to see things from a Sim's point of view!
I'm absolutely hooked and I can't wait to see where Elinor's adventures lead her.

Bestill my heart! An Austen-themed dynasty? Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors...

We are all in an uproar.

I'm very excited to read this too. The possibilities are great. I'm voting for having a lively female sim getting sick and then marrying a dull male sim.
It is a little thing of my own. I call it "Heart Foam". I shall not publish it. Farewell! Patience, Patience, farewell!

Exit Bunthorne.

Whew -- so many Jane Austen fans! Here's hoping that Elinor can live up to everyone's expectations. Maybe I should re-read Mansfield Park or something? Oh, the burdens of a simmer's life!

Reader, I Married Him

All right, it's not the most original line, but I've always felt that my distinguished family member had more of a right to it than Miss Bronte, much as I admire her novels. The Bronte girls were interested in psychology, so to speak, Great-aunt Jane in sociology, because marriage is more of a societal activity. But I'm jumping ahead of myself.

When I returned to Brindleton Bay, I began building on the generously-sized lot that the Watcher had provided for me. The first thing that went up was a bathroom. Bushes might be convenient, but there's nothing that says "permanence" like a fully functional plumbing system.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I did decide to save money, though, with a tent...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
...and a chair and firepit.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The view from my little abode was quite lovely at sunset.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
And at night, with the foghorn sounding, the nearby beach was haunting. But so far, I didn't have anyone to enjoy it with. A perusal of the BB, FH, OS, WC, and Windenburg phone book revealed that there was no one around named Edward, Edmund, or Henry, and as for Fitzwilliam, forget it.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
There was, however, a Gunther. Not quite what I was hoping for, but better than a Travis or Mitchell. He was a bookworm and creative, and clumsy was definitely preferable to noncommital or bro.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
We became friends, and I asked him out on a date. We went to the Sunnyside Diner for an early breakfast of Eggs Benedict.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
"Well, bust my buttons," exclaimed our waitress, Nina Caliente, "if it isn't my old flame, Gunther Munch."

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
"There was never anything between us," Gunther muttered, after she'd moved off with our order.
"Not even a button?" I inquired.
"We were in middle school," he tried to explain. "The only reason she was interested in me was so I would write her term paper for her."
"So you've always been partial to redheads," I continued.
Gunther took one look at me and realized I was teasing him. "I'll get you for this," he warned me. The next day he moved in -- without his mother and two brothers.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
We soon replaced the firepit with a kitchen decorated in Selvadoradian style. Gunther had apparently visited about the same time I was there, but had spent most of his time in the cantina while I was out exploring.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
"I'm allergic to bee stings," he told me. "I swell up like a beach ball. But I think it's amazing that you've done so much exploring. I never thought I'd meet a woman as brave and intelligent and beautiful as you, Elinor."
So we got engaged.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The kitchen had taken most of my profit from the one Omiscan treasure I'd found. In order to get married, I had to sell two of my genuine artifacts.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Both Gunther and I had the next two days off, so we got busy. I shooed him out of the kitchen while I made our cake.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
We invited over two of our friends from Selvadorada -- Maite Guerrero, who was one of the vendors...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
...and Carlos Campo, who had tried to teach me how to dance the rumba in the bar.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Gunther held my hand firmly while he slipped the ring on...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
...and then pulled me into an embrace as confetti floated down around us.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Our gold wedding officially registered when we fed each other our wedding cake.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Looking at the rudiments of our house (walls for the bedroom are next on my list)...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
...and the garden that Gunther has been tending, I realized how lucky I was.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
That night, as the moon rose over the lighthouse, I began to feel that this dynasty -- my dynasty -- was well and truly launched.

Until next time, Elinor

You inspired me to listen to Sense and Sensibility on audiobook (narrated by the fantastic Juliet Stevenson).

I love that Elinor married Gunther. He's a Sim that is overlooked all too often.

Gunther is the perfect choice for Elinor. How wonderful!
I'm impressed by how much exploring Elinor has achieved already! I'm so jealous of her Selvadoradan treasures on display!
The house looks charming!

Can't wait to read more, Marian!
