Kailyn's Vampire Adventure
« on: February 01, 2017, 09:20:47 AM »
Ok, first I have to admit that I really don't know what I'm doing. The more I read the rules for how to post stories here, the more confused I get. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong!

I have no idea how long this story will take, since I'm still learning about the Vampires pack which is pretty central to the plot (such as it is and what there is of it). There will probably be some trial and error as my sim and I figure out what does and doesn't work. I will attempt to put a chapter list in this post if/once it gets longer than three or four episodes.

Prologue
Chapter One
Interlude
Chapter Two
Chapter Three
Chapter Four (Final)

There are a lot of pictures in the last chapter, even after I combined some. Lots of action, not much narrative.  :P

Kailyn Rollins is a teen sim who loves the outdoors and growing things. While she has lived with her mother since her parents' divorce, I began my game play with her moving in with her father due to relationship problems between her and her mother's new boyfriend. (Which is to say, I created a household consisting of Kailyn and her father in CAS and moved them into a small pre-made house in Willow Creek).

Kailyn's dad greeting her when she arrives

Kailyn's father is an author and spends most of his time on the computer. He agrees to let Kailyn begin a small garden and spend her time as she likes as long as she keeps out of trouble, keeps her grades up, and doesn't disturb him while he's writing. She plants her first flower, taken from an early wild harvest, the same evening she moves in.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

In addition to her gardening, Kailyn takes over the cooking duties right away. Apparently her father has been subsisting on cereal, chips, and yogurt. A little time watching the cooking channel, and Kailyn can make a very respectable garden salad, with the leftovers stored in the fridge. Kailyn and her father both enjoy the salad.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
"My favorite author? Heheh, you, of course, dad!"

Just as she's heading to bed, Kailyn's father steps out onto the porch to greet a visitor. Kailyn thinks she sees something a bit odd through the window, but she's not really paying attention. She goes to bed in her new room feeling optimistic about the future.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Kailyn grows her garden and works on getting her grades up at her new school, and by the end of the day on Thursday she has a solid 'B' and a garden about as large as she can handle. Everything seems to be going well, although her dad spends a lot of time hanging out with that creepy lady from the first night, and he's apparently gone back to his quick junk-food meals instead of Kailyn's salads—at least, her most recent salad has lasted a lot longer than the first.

Friday morning, though, Kailyn wakes up feeling terrible, with surprisingly vivid memories of a nightmare:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
She tells her dad she's sick, and to her surprise, he immediately believes her and contacts the school to let them know she'll be staying home. He never used to let her stay home from school without a lot more evidence than “I don't feel good,” but maybe he's trying to show he trusts her?

Then, after dragging herself to the bathroom for a shower, Kailyn sees something odd in the mirror. Those are definitely twin puncture marks on her neck. So maybe it wasn't a nightmare...?

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Kailyn spends her long weekend doing research. She uses the internet on her Dad's computer while he's out with his weird lady friend, carefully clearing her search history when she's done. Then she sells some of her harvestables and the other collectables she's found, and purchases an old, mysterious book from one of her new online sources. Locking herself in her room, Kailyn reads the book, coming out only to eat, use the bathroom, and tend to her garden. She buys a second book, and a third.

From what she reads, Kailyn is positive that somehow, her father has become a vampire. She clearly isn't safe in this house. Garlic seems like the quickest and easiest defense, so she plants some in her garden and continues her studies. Frustratingly, while she reads repeatedly that vampirism can be cured, there is no hint of how to do it in any of the books she has purchased. She hears rumors of yet another book, but the asking price is far too high for her. She'll have to keep saving the money from her garden, and maybe this “Ultimate Tome” will tell her how to save her father. Hopefully in time to save herself, as well.

By Sunday evening, Kailyn's garlic is showing signs of maturity. Soon she'll be able to harvest it and create garlic braids or garlands to protect her room at night.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

But Monday morning, the garlic is gone as if it were never there. Someone has removed the entire plant. No garlic, no protection from midnight-snacking vampires.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Kailyn is frightened enough by now to try to contact her mother, even though she knows how unbelievable her story will sound, but is unable to reach her. It's almost as if she was never put in the game, or something.

One thing is clear: Kailyn can't stay here.

It looks interesting!  I like your start.  Is it normal for the hair color (dad's) to be different as a vampire?  I don't have the pack.

Nice socks, girl!

The dark form can be as different as you like. I'm not a big fan of this dramatic a hair color difference, honestly, but I'd already taken the picture by the time I realized that. I have seen dark forms that change face, eyes, hair, and even outfit all at once--almost looks like a totally different sim. I think in the future I'll go for more subtle.

Chapter One
« Reply #4 on: February 02, 2017, 01:20:26 PM »
Kailyn knows she's going to need garlic, plasma fruit, and wolfsbane to fight vampires, and that those things grow in Forgotten Hollow. She also knows she's going to need as much money as she can get her hands on so she can buy that vampire book and learn how to cure vampirism. The only access she has to cash is through selling her produce. Reluctantly, she spends one more night in her room, hoping her luck will hold.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

In the morning she eats a good meal, harvests everything she can from her garden, and makes a run around the neighborhood for collectibles. When it's time to leave for school, she heads to Forgotten Hollow instead.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Kailyn in front of the only empty lot in Forgotten Hollow. Let's just pretend she found an out-of-the-way hidden area instead of this highly visible spot right on the road, shall we?

Selling everything she can gives her around 1700 simoleons, enough to purchase a few camping necessities. She walks around her new neighborhood looking for plants and collectibles. She digs up a few interesting things, but unfortunately nothing is ready to be harvested. She fishes for her dinner, cooks it on an open fire, and spends her first night in a tent.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

By afternoon of the next day, Kailyn finds garlic ready to be harvested. She seems to be coming down with something that makes her break out in spots, but since there's nothing she can do about it, Kailyn just sticks it out. On the way home from her evening fishing, she finds her first wolfsbane ready for harvest.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Note the spots. Whatever this disease is, it has some very diverse symptoms.

On Thursday, Kailyn finally finds some plasma fruit. She has a good start on her own little garden, now, and is selling garlic and wolfsbane harvested from the wild plants around the neighborhood. The garlic seems to get the best price if it is made into wreaths first. Apparently Kailyn isn't the only one worried about vampires. She hangs one wreath by her tent and keeps one in her inventory, but sells the rest. All in all, Kailyn is starting to feel at home here.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Kailyn's campsite, including garden. Not pictured: a camping shower, also purchased early on. It's the only plumbing I'm planning to allow her, since the game won't let her wash in the water at the fishing site.

Kailyn is starting to feel bad about all the school she's missing, since she was really enjoying being a straight-A student, but the goal of not having an un-dead father takes precedence over a few grades, so she keeps gardening, fishing, and collecting. By Friday evening, she has enough money to purchase the Ultimate Vampire Compendium and still leave a reserve for emergencies. She is too tired to find a way to purchase it that night, and after a quick rinse in the camping shower, goes to bed.

Saturday morning, Kailyn wakes up feeling tired of this camping thing and wanting to purchase all sorts of impossible things like a toilet, stove, fridge, chair, and even a swimming pool. She chides herself for being so frivolous with her father's life on the line, has more fish for breakfast, waters her plants, and makes a trip into town for internet access.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I charge her a couple hundred simoleons for the round trip, since I figure it must be a fairly long one and she's seriously making a killing with the garlic wreaths.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Kailyn goes to the Windenburg library rather than Willow Creek, hoping to avoid seeing anyone she knows. It's gorgeous, but most important, it has internet access. Kailyn purchases her book, and as usual it arrives via super-fast drone delivery. She has it in her inventory as she walks out of the library.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Kailyn reads for a while, as she would have done on, say, a bus ride back to Forgotten Hollow, then, back “home” again, fishes for her dinner and has a little chat with her garden plants since she's feeling a bit lonely.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Maybe all the stress is driving her a little crazy?

After yet another meal of roasted fish, Kailyn spends the evening sitting by her fire and reading her new book. It's hard going, but she finally finds what she's been looking for: The Ultimate Vampire Cure!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

It's going to take some produce, some money, and, most difficult of all for a runaway teen, access to a bar. Kailyn decides to sleep on the problem.

Is it the runaway teen challenge?  If so, how clever to give it a storyline like this.

She's a great daughter with her dedication to curing her dad.  Wonder how dear old dad is feeling about her sudden disappearance.

I feel kind of bad for her talking to her plants though!

It's sort of a modified runaway teen. I'm not actually following a formal set of rules, though, and the goal is, obviously, to cure her father rather than to meet some specific set of goals for a "successful life." Since she can talk to her plants, I'm able to make her hide from just about everyone, instead of just not talking to adults. That's probably the only place where my "rules" are more strict than the official ones would be.

Interlude (not enough time today for a whole chapter)
« Reply #7 on: February 03, 2017, 10:51:38 AM »
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] This is Lilith Vatore, powerful creature of the night, able to command the obedience of her many vampiric offspring and of most mortals. Lilith is beautiful, strong, immortal—and very displeased.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Why is this? The problem is her latest offspring, one Bill Rollins. He has all the characteristics she was looking for: a steady source of income unaffected by his new inability to go out of doors during daylight hours, few mortal entanglements, and complete devotion to his Mistress.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Alas, Bill is also overweight and balding, and Lilith does so prefer attractive offspring.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

She had assumed this would be easily dealt with. A simple Command, and Bill would exercise for hours. Once he learned the joys of being fit and active, surely he would continue on his own time.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

This was what she had thought before learning Bill's third trait: Lazy. A lazy sim. Lilith cannot stand laziness, particularly not when it keeps her offspring from getting fit. The moment Lilith's command wears off, Bill is right back to his favorite activity: Sitting. Sitting and using the computer, sitting and reading, sitting and eating. This is good for his income (he is an author, after all), but very, very bad for his fitness level.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

And now, Bill won't stop talking about his daughter, who has apparently vanished. He's been going an about her every time Lilith visits for the past week. He thinks he frightened her away by losing control and having a little midnight drink, and is apparently feeling horribly guilty about this whole thing. He's becoming as bad as her brother, agonizing over a simple necessity! Not only is he not exercising, his writing production has gone down, as well. This in unacceptable. Clearly, worrying about this daughter is an added distraction Bill does not need.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Will he ever stop moaning about this?

If Bill had just turned his daughter in the first place, instead of only snacking on her plasma, this would not be an issue. Lilith points this out, but Bill does not seem very pleased with her statement of the obvious.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The sun will be up soon. Lilith needs to leave. Anyway, she has work to do. She may not be able to get this lazy excuse for a vampire to exercise, but she can at least deal with this distraction for him. One little bite and his daughter will be home, obedient, and, of course, immortal.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] I tried to get her in the middle of a vampiric run, but my first try did not work well, and the sun really was coming up—with her energy low, I didn't want to risk Lilith catching fire and dying just for a better screen shot.

An interesting turn of events!

I enjoyed seeing Dad worried about his daughter.  I thought he was going to be a bad guy for a moment.  Had to smile about his lazy ways, too.

Lilith is trouble, I'll be looking forward to seeing how Kailyn deals with her.  That is, if she can even get near with all the garlic going on.

Chapter Two
« Reply #9 on: February 04, 2017, 02:32:38 PM »
Kailyn wakes up Sunday morning and goes through her usual morning routine. She's remembered that there is a publicly available bar at the Oasis Springs park. She'll have to try to use that one, if she can find a time when no one is around to ask her what she's doing. Unfortunately, she's still a bit short of the 2500 simoleons, plus travel money, that she'll need.

Kailyn's small garden isn't bringing in a lot of money for her, but it's the best source she has of high-quality ingredients. Her real money-maker is harvesting wild garlic and creating garlic wreaths for sale. Another day of this routine and she should have plenty of money for mixing her cure.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Monday evening, though, as she roasts yet another fish for dinner (too much more of this and she'll have to start eating harvestables to avoid scurvy!), Kailyn catches a glimpse of her father's scary lady-friend. Fortunately, Lilith doesn't seem to spot her fire and hurries right on past.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Needing to be extra careful in case Lilith shows up again means that Kailyn takes a little longer with her fishing and harvesting, and she doesn't have enough money for her vampire cure until late in the day on Tuesday. She spends the night in her tent, getting up well before dawn, tends to her garden, and makes the trip to Oasis Springs (again, 200 simoleons for a round-trip ticket).

Unfortunately for Kailyn, the room with the bar seems to be very popular. She fishes while she waits for an opportunity to use the bar unobserved.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

After a few hours, Kailyn spots her chance. The only one left in the room with the bar is a teenage boy who seems completely engrossed in his reading. Since it's still during school hours, she figures he'll be unlikely to tell anyone about seeing her. After all, he'd have to admit to being there himself.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Kailyn successfully mixes up what the book claims is a vampire cure. It takes quite a lot of garlic, wolfsbane, and plasma fruit, in addition to the expense (other rare ingredients, presumably?), so she's only able to make one. Better have gotten it right the first time!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] The cure looks disgusting. Will she even be able to get her dad to drink this?

Kailyn travels back to her campsite to eat, shower, and spend the night. In the morning, she'll have to travel again, back to Willow Creek.

While she's in the shower, though, Kailyn gets an unexpected visitor.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Lilith obviously does not have good intentions, and it's clear that Kailyn's shower is too far away from her garlic wreath by the tent, and that the garlic in her inventory is doing absolutely nothing to hold Lilith off.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Kailyn tries to talk her down, but Lilith isn't interested in talking. Kailyn brings out the vampire cure, hoping to use it against Lilith.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Apparently the game won't allow a teen to fight an adult vampire, not even in an attempt to cure the vampire, so I used the “throw drink” interaction to get a glass in Kailyn's hand.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Kailyn tries to splash the cure on Lilith, but Lilith dashes away from the wave of liquid at an amazing speed, leaving Kailyn with no cure and no way to make another without more money and supplies.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] So it turns out the vampire cure drink spoils just as quickly as any other drink. I don't know if being spoiled makes it ineffective or not, since I was unable to actually try it, but I threw it out and pretended, for story purposes, that she tried and failed to use it on Lilith. Kailyn will just have to make another.

Terrified that Lilith might realize she only had one vampire cure, Kailyn gathers up her things and runs into the hills. She walks and runs until nearly overcome with exhaustion, then camps for the night.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Once full daylight arrives, Kailyn cooks up her last fish. She gathers some more wild garlic, and leaves Forgotten Hollow. Clearly her campsite, and its little garden, are no longer safe.

A very intriguing story! I admire Kailyn's spunk and resourcefulness. Here's hoping she manages to cure her father.

Awesome, too bad about the wasted cure after all the saving and hard work, though.

Chapter Three
« Reply #12 on: February 05, 2017, 01:35:55 PM »
Kailyn travels, once again, to Windenburg. It still has the advantage of being an area where she's unlikely to run into anyone who knows her, and she remembers from her visit to the library that there seemed to be some pretty deserted, overgrown areas nearby. Perfect for a hidden campsite.

Upon arriving, Kailyn takes the time to catch a couple of fish and try to judge the best area to begin looking for a campsite. She decides on the bluffs, and arrives there in time to get yet another small garden started. Without being able to harvest the wild garlic, wolfsbane, and plasma fruit in Forgotten Hollow, what she plants here will be her only source of those key ingredients.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

After a fire roasted fish and a quick run through the camp shower, Kailyn is ready to spend her first night at the Bluffs.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The next morning, Kailyn finally has time to look around her new home.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] after “using” a nearby bush, that is

From the graffiti and other signs, she can tell it's not always deserted here. She'll have to make sure she doesn't leave her tent or camp shower sitting out and visible when she isn't using them.

She's pretty happy with the number of wild plants and places to hunt for collectibles. Nowhere to fish, unfortunately, but Kailyn explores a little further afield, and eventually finds a reasonably deserted beach where she can catch her breakfasts and dinners. It's a longer walk than she'd prefer, but it should do.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Kailyn finds a few collectibles, including two very nice fossils, and catches some very ordinary frogs, which she turns into plasma packs, worth 50 simoleons each. It's when she's on her way back to her garden site, though, that she finds the most exciting thing:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] A portable bar has simply appeared along the path. It definitely wasn't there when she came past this morning!

Since Kailyn is getting very tired and hungry, she can't take advantage of this windfall immediately. She attempts to carry the bar with her, but it seems rooted in place. A very immobile portable bar. Reluctantly, Kailyn leaves it alone. She eats, showers, and sets up her tent for another night.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] In the morning, the bar is gone. At first Kailyn is very depressed, but then she tells herself she is no worse off than she was before she found it, and begins her daily harvesting and collecting routine. She still needs money, after all.

Kailyn's rounds take her several hours, and by the time she returns, it's evening again—and the bar is back! Kailyn has found several lucrative items, but she's going to need more ingredients, and that's going to take time, since her plants are only just reaching maturity. If that bar just keeps popping up every night, her job will be much, much easier.

The garlic is ready to harvest. Still nothing from the wolfsbane and plasma fruit trees, though. The plasma fruit is always slow. Kailyn reminds herself to be patient.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Tuesday, two things of interest happen: Kailyn's wolfsbain is ready for harvest, and her camp shower breaks, as it has been threatening to do for days.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Good thing she keeps this great big wrench with her at all times!

Kailyn's gardening and fishing skills are both up to level 7, and thanks to the shower breaking her handiness is nearly to level 2. Her cooking skills are coming along nicely, too, from all that roasting of fish. She's been working on her singing to pass the time, but it's still pretty awful.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
One thing about all the time Kailyn's been spending fishing is that she's had plenty of time to think. And she's realized she's been so focused on the vampire cure that she hasn't thought about the other things she's learned in her reading. Like the recipe for a vampire resistance cocktail. It's inexpensive and only takes a little wolfsbane. If she'd had one of those, she might not have needed to waste her vampire cure on Lilith. She may have to start keeping one or two of those around.

Chapter Four (End)
« Reply #13 on: February 07, 2017, 05:04:32 PM »
By Wednesday afternoon, Kailyn's grade has dropped to a 'D', but her plasma fruit trees are almost ready for harvesting and she has plenty of money. A trip to Willow Creek is in the very near future.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Thursday, after caring for her garden, Kailyn harvests all the produce she can. She now has enough ingredients for more vampire cures than she has money for. It's time.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Kailyn waits impatiently for the magically appearing bar to show up again. She catches herself dinner while she waits, and finds a few more collectibles.

The bar shows up in the late afternoon. Remembering the near disaster with Lilith, Kailyn mixes two vampire cures, just to be safe. She also makes herself a vampire resistance cocktail.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Kailyn takes the drinks with her to her dad's house in Willow Creek. She can see her dad in the kitchen through the window, but he doesn't notice her.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] A quick gulp of the resistance cocktail, and she's ready.

Much to Kailyn's relief, her father is clearly happy to see her. He apologizes and asks how she is without even waiting for a response.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Even bringing out the vampire cure doesn't make him angry with her. He doesn't seem very eager to drink it, but he's listening to her arguments.

And then someone else arrives.

The moment Lilith sees Kailyn she changes to her dark form and tries to bite her—but Kailyn's resistance cocktail does its job.

Kailyn's father is furious. He snatches the vampire cure from the table. He and Lilith step out of the small house for fighting room, and the most amazing fight Kailyn has ever seen breaks out right out by the sidewalk.

Lilith has been defeated. Kailyn's father throws the cure in her face.

In front of Kailyn's eyes, Lilith twists, turns, and changes.

Lilith backs away and then runs, leaving Kailyn and her father standing outside, still in the direct rays of the setting sun. Kailyn's father is looking quite uncomfortable, so they hurry inside.

Kailyn brings out her second cure, ready to continue the argument, but her father stops her. He reached out, picks up the glass, and smiles at her.

Life has gone back to normal at the Rollins home. Kailyn is working hard to catch up again in school, and her father is writing his novels, and reading his books, and taking naps. He never works out.

The house looks a little different these days. Kailyn's garden is thriving, with some new additions.

Since the addition of Kailyn's garlic wreaths to the house, there has been only one vampire visitor: Caleb, Lilith's brother, asking for a cure. He's always hated drinking blood.
