Sims 4 Swap Shop/How to make a link from the gallery?
« on: November 04, 2015, 03:46:59 PM »
I followed a link posted by Grimsoul to dowload one of his houses, and found there was a Sims4 Swap Shop where it resided as well as being in the gallery.  The Gallery is a nightmare for finding houses and things built by our forum members even with the hashtag.  So when I tried to actually go the Swap Shop I got a message saying it either didn't exist or I wasn't allowed access.  Is it gone and if so why?  I personally think we need it because the "official" gallery is overloaded and difficult to navigate.  I want to find stuff our guys build easily.

If I wasn't allowed access, again, why and how do I change this?

Part one of this is fixed thanks to Mrs. Flynn and Carl.  Part two is how do you make a link from the gallery, or your lots, to your specific page in the swap shop as @Dellena and @Twinmum have done.  Need a simple tutorial for doing this please.

Again my thanks to Mrs. Flynn who gave me THIS link, and to our dear Pam who wrote the info.  Now I have an added question or two:

You can also put links to chapters in a story to make it easy for readers to jump straight to the chapter.

1. Click on the message icon on a particular post.
2. The URL will have changed to include said post.
3. Copy the URL and wrap it in the URL tags you want to use.
4. Preview to make sure it works.
5. Post!

What I need to know is what message icon?  If you click on an icon in from of a message title you get choices for all kinds of smiley's etc. but the url you would copy is just the basic message url.  If you go into the topic and click reply, again there is a message icon but same kind of stuff.  So where do you click?  If you copy the url on top of the page where you want to reply, do you follow the same steps with the tags and if so where do you put that?  In the message title?  What am I missing?

@Joria I guess this is just worded improperly. Right next to the icon dropdown you saw, there's Re: Sims 4 Swap Shop/How to... etc.

That title links directly to that post, so a person going 4 pages deep would be taken directly to that post and even on the part of the page where the post shows up.

So you copy that address, which usually ends with #msgXXXXXXX

like this: carls-sims-4-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,25035.msg427510.html#msg427510

I edited it to say that you can right click the post title and select copy link address/url to get this address as well.

Ok, I wasn't really clear.  Here is what I do:

Go into the topic.  Go to reply.  Click on the icon which changes the url in the thingie above.  Address bar?  Put my cursor in the line of the topic address I want to add to.  Type in the words I want to add so it would look like this, (italicized word are what I want to add):

Subject: Time for Thyme Again Something to Do

Or I could just say Chapter X after Time for Thyme Again.

Once I have the added words in the title I tried to follow the method for adding a link, ie wrap the tags.  But I can't because there is only so much space, so when I go to add the last bit, [/url], at the end, I can't because I can't put my cursor on the end.  So step by step, what exactly do I do to imbed a link in the title of my story that indicates a new chapter, please.

1. Make the Post, name the subject whatever you want - even if it's a reply. Once the story is posted, you can begin to get the link. Go back to that post and click the name at the top

2. I clicked your post title (Re: Sims 4 Swap Shop...) just above this one and got the url: http://www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,25035.msg427551.html#msg427551

3. That's what is in my address bar. I select it and press control + C to copy

4. Now to put it in the index to link people to it, I'd do this in the first post where I want to list chapters:

Code: [Select]
[url=http://www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,25035.msg427551.html#msg427551]Link to Chapter X[/url]

Sounds like the url= part is the thing you're missing, if I'm understanding this correctly. Pam laid it out in such a way that you'd get what you'd expect from just wrapping it in url tags

Code: [Select]
[url]http://www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,25035.msg427551.html#msg427551[/url]

becomes

http://www.carls-sims-4-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,25035.msg427551.html#msg427551 - you can't put a name in there with it wrapped that way.

If this helps you, I'll modify the instructions. @ tag me so it gets me back, kind of distracted today. I'll come back and try to be more detailed if this doesn't help ya!

Cheers,

Carl

Ok, again, I wasn't clear.  What I had hoped to do was put a link in the subject line so folks looking at a thread could click on that link and go directly to the new chapter.  After hours of work and trying many different ways with my brilliant husband helping and guiding, we found out you absolutely CANNOT do that because the subject line will truncate the url from the address bar making it impossible to make a link.  In reality, what I really wanted was to just change the wording in the subject line to indicate it is a new post.  For example:

Time for Thyme Again  normal subject line

Time for Thyme Again new post November 23  changed subject line

What I was doing wrong was trying to change the threads subject line from within the new post and you simply cannot do it from there.  You have to go to the very first post, change the subject line there, save and voila, it shows up the way I wanted.  It was so simple to do but I was going about it the wrong way.

Now, in order to have chapters with links, I would have to do that in the first post, write out and link all those chapters.  Folks, when clicking on the thread subject, would go to that first post, select which chapter they wanted, click on it and be taken to the appropriate page.  Just the way Pam, and then you, Carl, showed.  But that wasn't what I was trying to do.  It seems silly to me to have all those chapter links when all you have to do is see the page numbers and click on one to get to the right page and then scroll down.  I mean, really, how hard is it to scroll?
However, in any FUTURE stories I will do the chapter thing, reserving the first post for that kind of stuff.

To a different issue.   Folks are seeing my pictures as being jpg.  I assure you they are NOT jpg.  I went into Mediafire and checked.  They are all listed as pngs there so the url I copy for the picture would send a png picture, would it not?  In any case in the future all my pictures will be jpgs.  My stories have literally thousands of pictures, so I am not sure I am willing to go back and redo them all.  I apologize to those who would like to read my stories because I know it makes it hard.  My dear friend Mrs. Flynn has said she would like to read my stories but has to give up because of how long it takes to load those pictures.  I am seriously considering closing my Runaway Teen story, even though I like it.  I'm not so far ahead in it that I couldn't just start another that everyone could read.  For my dynasty, I worked too hard on it to close it and I might actually go in a bit at a time and change the pics.  No guarantees on that, but I will only upload pictures that are jpgs.

Sorry for the wall of text and the confusion.  Thanks to everyone for sticking with me on this.

I don't think you can put a link in a subject line.

@Joria yeah Dellena is right on that, as you realized.

Don't expect you to go back and change the pics, we don't want to put that much work on people. It's simply a good practice going forward that will not be enforced per se, just a factor if you want people on mobile or with slow internet to be able to read your future stories :)

Too late.  Already doing it.  It just bugged me that it wasn't "perfect", so I've been working on changing all my picture files to jpg.  That part of the process is easy, (thank you for that link), but switching all the pictures is a bit tedious.  Not sure I'll do it with the dynasty but the Runaway Teen is almost done.  Gallery shots will be next.  Adding chapter links as well.
